I honestly cannot believe this is happening!
I posted a few months ago because my boy broke his hind leg. We were lucky enough to have great family and friends to help us out financially to get an amputation, and he did great! Just started getting comfortable navigating on tile, using his new litter pan, overall adjusting very well.
Tuesday night, I'm doing dishes and hear a crash. I run out, he's knocked over a skateboard we had leaning in a corner. I do the usual check over, as he's just standing in shock. Then he goes to move... He's just dragging his good back leg, scooting across the floor. PANIC MODE.
I set him up in his hospital cage to restrict movement, called my partner who was at a movie, of course, and waited. When my partner got home, we wanted to see if he was going to try to use his leg, so we let him out for a minute. He used it, but it was definitely uncomfortable and weird. Back in the cage he goes.
I call the vet who did his surgery first thing Wednesday morning, she is so sympathetic. Meanwhile, I feel like the worst mum in the world. She said the fact that he's willing to put weight on it is a good sign, and prescribed some pain meds for the next five days.
It's Friday morning now, he hasn't been out of his cage since Tuesday, other than being held to clean his cage. He's been using his leg to move around the small cage, is very active, is eating pooping, cleaning. He comes right to the cage, wants out. So, this morning, I put him on some carpet, he stretched it out, did a slow lap, then just lied down in his normal spot. I cleaned his cage, and put him back in.
I'm just at a loss here. This is such a new situation. I'm not sure how to tell if he's using his leg because it's starting to feel better or if he's using it because it's the only hind leg he has. The vet seemed to want to just wait this out because he's definitely still delicate from the weeks of vets visits from his surgery, and doesn't want to stress him out too much.
Any advice or good vibes are much appreciated. I feel like I'm having deja vu!
