Each year we start a new thread to show off our rabbit cages. Not only is it fun to see everyone's cages, it is also useful for new bunny owners. [Since there weren't many posts for 2023, we'll include 2024 here as well.]

Whether you've made a cage out of cube grids, exercise pen, xl dog crate, old furniture or any combination, we'd love to see it! (there is a separate thread for outdoor cages here: Outdoor Cages... post your photo ) If your rabbit free roams, show your rabbit's "home base area."

We want this thread to be full of photos!

A WORD ABOUT CAGE SIZES

"Proper" or "recommended" cage size can be a touchy topic. However I believe all can agree that bigger is always better.

There are varying recommendations by different groups so I will include a few here to give a general feel for some of those recommendations. The sources will be included as well. Generally, these are for indoor house rabbits. The information is included in the spirit of providing the best we can for our bunny companions.

Bigger is better! A rabbit's home should be at least 4-6 times the size of your bunny when he's entirely stretched out - more if he is confined for a large amount of the day. Enclosure sizes also should be decided in conjunction with the amount of exercise time and space the rabbit has. One guideline to go by is at least 8 square feet of enclosure space combined with at least 24 square feet of exercise space, for 1-2 rabbits, in which the rabbit(s) can run and play at least 5 hours per day.

A rabbit needs at least four hours per day of running time inside the house or in a fenced yard, supervised by a human to prevent attack by predators. Our house rabbits are often never caged, but if you find it necessary to keep your rabbit confined while you are away, then be sure the cage is at least 3' x 4' on the floor dimensions, and at least 2' high, so the rabbit can comfortably stand on her haunches to look around. Large breeds (more than 6 lbs.) need an even larger hutch to be comfortable and healthy.

Our recommendations are based on research, where it exists. One thing that all welfare organisations agree on is that A Hutch Is Not Enough. We recommend a minimum area of 10ft x 6ft x 3ft high (3m x 2m x 1m) for a pair of average sized rabbits, regardless if they live indoors or outside.

[Chino's Mum Mum]

Hi, Chino is free roamed and has quite a few places. He uses the litter bin that has to be on the middle of the staircase and naps on a pillow on the step below. Then he has his play area on a carpet between our lounge and dinning area. A pen with hidey house in the kitchen. A hutch in the garden. And at the end of the day he retires under the couch 🛋

I just finished our rabbits' space. We are picking them up tomorrow morning; two mini plush lops. We're going to see how they do together but we're prepared in case we have to separate them until we get them neutered and spayed. Eventually they will free roam the house most of the day. But this their new home.

Here is my rabbit Dune’s pen.
Beside him is Opal’s pen, then Bullet’s. The fence (on the right) is part of an old baby crib and there is a piece just like it between each pen, they are also removable for cleaning purposes. The wire only has one inch gaps so they can sniff each other through it, but can’t fight or anything. The floor is vinyl so that it is easy to clean, but not slippery.

this is my baby's, she is only locked up at night and the rest of the day it's open and she can go anywhere she wants in the house



to protect the floor I put some protection and a puzzle mat on top so that it is less hard for her and easier to clean for me

Made an enclosure built with wood, hot glue and tears on the cheap for my free roamers. The front comes off via a threaded rod through eyelet connection and the rubber covered base is strong enough to stand on.

This year's indoor section has been a little forgotten, no? I'll gladly add to it!

This shows Lady Iris' temporary enclosure after migration to summer estate.

These are various perspectives of the space she had with her hubby Storm in their winter estate. (Scouring my gallery for these photos swarmed me with thoughts of how i'll soon have my lady here and how i so wish that Storm could've made it.) Not so fancy but still very liveable.

And this one showcases their summer residence-just the length of it. I still couldn't fit the full length into the picture even though i had a high bunk vantage point.

Not the best of pictures...
But this is a view to about half my open living space and Iris' main living corner right after a good clean. I'm extremely happy to know that she's been completely freeroam for almost a whole year now. Yes, she destroys my bedding covers every week; yes, i've just accepted it as bunny collateral because i cannot bring myself to deny her access for she comes to cuddle me at night.
the floor is a patchwork of foam mats, old blanket and various carpets. And ceramic tiles on the lowest righthand-side in this picture.
