It was bound to happen, making a new to bunnies mistake...

Bill's cage opens on the side and on the top and when he is running free I always have the top and the side open because its obviously easier to get in to clean stuff up. Well... I put him away for the night and shut and latched the side door but just closed the top (since I didn't see how he could get up that high and get out - or how he would even know to push the top open)...

Well...

You guessed it - my boyfriend just got over to my place and called me to ask why I left the bunny running free when I went to work... I told himI didn't and he said Bill is sitting in the middle of the living room looking at him.... with the top of the cage opened...

:baghead

Guess Bill is smarter than me.

It's ok. I'm sure everyone makes a mistake like that. I've had rabbits for almost 4 years and I've often left the cages unlocked, and the rabbits have escaped. Luckily, it was the ground cages, and none of the cages higher up!

I bet Bill was happy with the extra time out of his cage, though!

LOL! We've had bunnies for 4 years now and one night recently, my daughter didn't clip our cottontail's cage correctly and she was out all night. She had a great time apparently! LOL!

She's such a good girl, she pooped on the newspaper under our coffee table! noplace else!

His cage is in the same place where he gets free run - so he wasn't really in any danger - it is all bunny proofed and he even has a water dish and litter box outside his cage so he was alright - just enjoying freedom without 'mom' looking over his shoulder!

My living room bunnies get their raisin at night, and they know it's time to go in their pen. Once, when they were reluctant to go in, I half-closed the gate and went in to give Tobi her raisin, with the intention of putting Nick and Amelia in for bed afterwards. But, it was late and I was tired, and I forgot the gate wasn't closed and went to bed. The next morning (a Saturday) I was awakened early by the sound of the Bunny-500 through the house. Without getting up, I peeked out the bedroom door, and thought I saw both bunnies streak through the dining room. I thought to myself, "that's absurd, they can't get out of their pen," and went back to sleep for another hour.

When I got up to feed them later, I found both bunnies in their pen, gate ajar, acting as though nothing unusual had occured. :D

Bunnies r very smart. I never latch my cage. When i had 3 cages and 5 bunnies with me nobunny jumped out. Now i just have 1 cage and bunnies and only 1 of them thinks about climbing out but looses her balance before she gets high enough.
All though when everyone spent time time at mom and dad's one of the younger guys did make a break for it, lol

That still happens to me, and I've had a rabbit almost four years now! I leave the top half-panel of Berry-Boo's cage open. I did it last night, too. Luckily, she is smart enough to know that if she leaps out, it's a pretty far fall to the ground, and she won't have access to her water bottle or litter pan. Whenever I leave it open, she sits there and greets me by the open door. If the bottom half-panel was open, she would have chewed through my entire apartment before I would know she was out!

That happened to Chris and I once. When we only had Buttercup, one morning Buttercup was on our bed giving his Daddy kisses :kiss:and Chris said to me "Oh that's so cute you brought Buttercup to see me".I said no you brought him to see me. We forgot to close his cage up the night before and the little Rascal had the whole night to explore our upstairs.

Needless to say we were very careful to close the cage every night. Now he is the llucky one he lives cage free in our family Room.

That is so adorable! It was probably breakfast time and he was waking you up the only way he knew how! :)
