Just pulled a long piece of wax out of my girlfriend's rabbit's ear. The part down the deepest was white like a bar of soap but connected to the rest 3/4 which was normal brown. Reading online this means ear infection most likely? He has been scratching his ear for a month. We tried to treat initially with an ear cleaner Zymox. He is protective of the ear indicating there may be some pain. I am going to take him to the vet tomorrow. Has anyone dealt with this before? I read one posting that someone had this and was prescribed antibiotic Baytril. I confess I find it annoying every vet trip is $100 plus medicine costs and a lot of times I could have gotten the medicine online for 5 or 10 bucks.

It does sound like an ear infection. They are pretty serious in rabbits, and if left untreated, may spread to the inner ear which can lead to neurological symptoms. So it's good you are seeing a vet right away.

Yes, baytril is a common antibiotic that vets start out with for ear infections. Though if cost is an issue, you could ask if there is a less expensive antibiotic that you could try instead. Another option is if you have a pharmacy near you that compounds medication and they carry enrofloxacin(baytril), they could compound a liquid suspension for a better price. If you don't want to get it from the vet, as the cost is often double, then this is what I would suggest. You don't need to let them pressure you into buying it from them either, as some vet offices are kind of pushy about this. But I would suggest calling the pharmacy ahead of time before your vet visit, to make sure they have it and could compound it for you when you get the prescription.

If you don't have a good rabbit vet.

Jessamine one of my rabbits recently has a bad ear abscess operated on and she had whitish yellow ear wax so I would be taking the bun to the vet and that doesn't make sense? $100 every vet trip? First one for her consult was $39 for condition and the rest for ear drops and antibiotics and her operation was only $120 and then the follow up was entirely free. You must have an expensive vet! Mine was prescribed Entoril but it could he you don't have the same in your country or Baytril isn't here.
