I would like to get a red rabbit. At first I was searching for the thriantas, but then I ran across a picture of a NZ red that had colors that rivaled the thrianta. This could have simply been the lighting, it's hard to judge color with online pictures.

I like the bigger rabbits, so I am kind of leaning towards the NZ red. Do the colors between the two breeds compare? I'm looking for a red, not so much orange-ish or fawn. I would imagine that NZ reds would be easier to find than the thriantas, but that's just a guess.

Any advice?

I appreciate it!

Both of those rabbits are gorgeous. They are also both very rare, unfortunately. It depends on what breeders are in your area. I know we have more Thrianta breeders than NZ Red breeders here, because I see more Thriantas at shows than NZ Reds. There is a member on the forum who breeds NZ Reds in Pennsylvania, I think, so you might want to post in the Rabbitry section looking for a local NZ Red breeder. She might know someone local to you.

You can also post in the Regional section of the forum looking for either breeder, or go to www.arba.org and look for breeders near you. Another option that is less likely but preferred is to check local shelters and rescues at www.petfinder.org . It is not common for these bunnies to show up in a rescue, but it does happen, and you never know, you may see a picture of a bunny online that steals your heart. If you want a pet rather than a show bunny, getting one from a shelter saves a lot of money because they usually are already spayed or neutered, which is really recommended for pet bunnies for health and behavioral concerns, and that is a very expensive surgery.

I know the NZs will be a lot bigger than the Thriantas and will have a different body shape. They are more in the 10-12 lb range, whereas the Thriantas I think top out around 6-8lb. A bigger bunny will usually be calmer and more docile, but less happy about being picked up, and more prone to some health issues. Larger bunnies have shorter lifespans by a couple of years due to the strain on their hearts.

Other than that, there aren't many broad generalities you can make about personality traits in rabbits based on breed. They are not like dogs in that certain behaviors are selected for in breeding. The rabbit's personality will be something you can only determine by meeting them. I would start by looking at local shelters and breeders, and go from there. Most breeders will not ship bunnies a large distance due to stress on the animals.

my flashie is the kewlest looking bunny ..even in person he is bright as can be...but ur right about pics being hard to decipher a bunnies coloring...i can vouch for Thriantas being very vibrant...and they are cobbier then a NZ red..i havent seen a NZ in person but from what ive researched and heard is Thriantas are the redest bunnies out there..my Flashie is 5 1/2 lbs..and hes where he should be in size...and Tonyshuman is right i had a hard time finding a thrianta breeder in Az. and when i finally did ..there was only 1 available and that was Flash.....ive never even heard of Nz Red breeders...good luck and post pics of ur new bun when u get em..:)
oh almost forgot /ive searched for thriantas on craigslist and have seen them in there a couple of times...

I have had NZ/Cal mixes in the past, so I tend to prefer the bigger buns. Which is why if the color between the thriantas and the NZ reds are very similar, I would go with the NZ reds.

^_^ Gotta love petting those rex.

I guess the best thing to do is visit local breeders and see the buns in person. Luckily, I have found 3 thrianta breeders fairly close and one of them has NZ red. I'm hoping the one with both, contacts me back, I'd love to compare both in person. :)

If you want the softest fur on the planet, consider a red mini-rex.
I love the red mini-rex. When I get another bun I would love to have one. I love mini-rex personalities and love their soft fur.

I've looked into the chins too. Maybe one day! LOL I would have so many rabbits it wouldn't even be funny, it'd be a big mess with long ears everywhere. I think I've narrowed it down to either the thrianta or the NZ red. Kind of leaning toward the NZ red, but I want a dark red rabbit. It's hard to judge colors online, it seems that many of the NZ reds have a bit of a fawn-ish tint to them. I just don't know if that's lighting, or if the thriantas are just a darker red.

This is kind of the color I'm looking for (not my pic)

this pic pops up under new zealand red search, but as I mentioned earlier, most other pics have them a lighter fawn or brown color. Are they this red in person? Does it matter mostly on the bloodline?

Most other NZ red pics are more this color(again, not my pic):

I guess I'm trying to figure out, if I'm wanting the first color would I be better off with the thrianta or the NZ?

I know, I'm being difficult. LOL I have that first color "stuck" in my head and that's what I want. If I didn't stick with my thought I would have one or two of every breed and variety! That's a lot of buns!(carrots, cages, food, water filling, petting, and snuggling! LOL)

Oh, lighting has a lot to do with it. Here is a thrianta breeder site showing their does, you can see lighting can make the same rabbit look fawn-ish orangey(love the descriptive words, right?) or that deep red. Now I wonder if the NZ reds are the same way in their pictures? Oi, I hope that local breeder with both gets back with me. :p

Site with obvious lighting effects on the rabbits.

I think out of all the red bunnies i have seen Thriantas arent called the fire of the fancy for nothing. Some can be lighter and other are deep red. I have noticed Nz reds to be on the lighter side. If youre looking for dark i would go with a fireball.

in the UK the standard color is Orange for Thriantas ..but in the US the standard is fiery red ..so thats prob why u see a few dif shades when ur searching online for Thriantas.

Blaze_Amita has had NZ reds maybe she can tell you more about their coloring..

That lighter coloring shade that you are seeing in the new zealand, i saw it in my red doe this summer, she had plenty of outside run time in the xpen and she seemed to shade up lighter, but come winter again she darkened right back down.

THat's my buck, at first I thought Flash's bunny was a New zealand red.*above*

Above you can see how my doe lightened up over the summer, so did my aunts red doe, but both have darkened back down.

And this one is a red mini rex that was pulled from the meat buyer at the small animal auction I went to when I lived in New York. He has since been rehomed.

Aragorn's body. The camera flash does made a world of difference in the color that you see.

There are also Red Standard Rex. You just have to look around to find a local breeder of Thrianta's and or Red NZ.! I would look on the arba website like somebody said.!

Heather oh my gosh i want that red mini rex..that is a gorgeous coat....wow just looks like caramel..
and i gotta admit those NZ Reds sure are pretty...id have a toss up too with which red bunny:)Thanks Heather for sharing all ur pics:)

Yes, thanks for sharing all the pictures! They are all just beautiful!

There is a local breeder who carries both the thrianta and the NZ red that came highly recommended and they referred me to his email. No phone number unfortunately, so I just have to wait for a response.

Thank you all for all your help and input!

Thriantas will likely have more vibrant coats overall because red is the only color they come in, so breeders have been working on perfecting that color.

NZ's are a more commercial breed, so I'm guessing that their point distribution wouldn't have as much weight on color. I don't know off hand, but just guessing.

Wow.! That is pretty :banghead that somebody would do that.! If they don't like breeders they shouldn't be doing that and kept crap to them selves.. People can be so mean and nasty.
But anyways they do got some pretty bunnies.! :)

I know I am so flustered about the whole thing. This forum doesn't have "report" buttons on the posts to get the MODS attention ASAP, and the I can no longer edit that post. I just wanted to be around rabbit knowledgeable people, not provide a means for people to send out stuff like this. :(
