I live in Kaneohe, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. I've traveled quite a bit but I can't compare Hawaii to anywhere else. It is so diverse. There are people with so many ethnicities and culture. Hawaii is very cultural. There's always some kind of cultural festivity, whether it's a pow-wow or a bon dance, people of all races celebrate.
Hawaii is a part of the United States. In fact it's the 50th state. It's interesting how many people don't know that including Americans!
As for school, public elementary school kids start at 8AM and end at 2:00PM. Public high schools start at 8AM and end at 2:30PM. School is five days a week. I'm in college now and have classes three days a week from 9:30AM to 3PM.
In Japan I had school five days a week, and six days the next week. The weeks rotated. The sixth day would be on a Saturday. The elementary school I went tostarted at 8:30AM and ended at 3:30PM. It was a really interesting experience. We had a teacher who taught all subjects but English. We had an English teacher who was actually from Venezuela and she also spoke Spanish. Lunch was served to the homeroom and their lunches were delicious!
Yokohama is a really safe place. I caught the train by myself when I was eight. There were even younger kids catching the train. The crime rate is low compared to America's. I haven't been to Japan in nearly eight years and I miss it so much! If things go as planned, I might visit this summer for a couple weeks.
