When I lived in Canada I had severalcats. Each year, when Christmas came they would invariablypull down the tree. One year I thought I would be smart andanchor the tree to the wall. At least I thought it was thesmart thing to do.

I went to bed that night, and my cat Misty got into my room andpreceeded to bite my ear. I must have thrown her off the bed6 times before I became fully awake.

A noise in the other room grabbed my attention it was.... hiss jinglejingle.... hiss jingle jingle. I got out to the livingroomand the xmas tree is shivering... I look around it to the back andthere is Precious... she had climbed the tree and fell andshe somehow had fallen between the loop of string that was holding thetree up. She must have panicked because the rope was twistedaround her neck. I reached to grab her and she panickedfurther and she sunk her teeth right thru my finger.

Misty saved her life that night by coming into my room, or Precious would have died.

I was left with reminders that night.. teeth marks on my ear and 2holes in my finger. Needless to say the next night we boughta broader stand so that the tree did not topple. For the next10 years every xmas we would put up the tree and when Precious wouldwalk by she would hiss at it. She was a very lucky girl shesurvived that and lived to be 22. God bless her!

I can see that cat Hiss at the tree because ofwhat happened. That is no good for a cat getting stuck too but funnyhearing the cat hiss every year.

One night a fewmonths ago, one of our cats started meowing. Not the usual meow, oreven the "I'm hungry" rrrrrrrrrr-OOOOOOOWWWWW. This was serious. AndLOUD. She was wandering around the house, hitting ungodly notes, anddriving us all crazy. What is wrong with that cat?! She wouldn'tstop. Nothing we could do to get her to shut up, and I was starting toget that mommy-sense that told me something was wrong. Did a headcount, and realized we were two cats short. That's when my sister foundthe broken window screen.

The other cats (Scully and Miko)hadpushed the screen out of a bedroomwindow and escaped into theback yard. It was pitch black, and raining. We didn't know, andprobably wouldn't have discovered the fact until much later. The catsare not allowed out because of the high risk of predators, dogs, etc.and Miko, along withher sister Stephanie, were practicallyhand-raised andposess the survival skills of a cottonball.

Luckily for us (and the cats) we found themhuddled underneath a car, freezing, wet, and terrified - they would nothave been able to climb back through the window, and who knows whatwould have happened to them if we did not know they weregone.

So far none of my animals have been heroes, butI had a dog that was an excellent nanny. For my 6th birthday my parentsgot me a long haired dachshund puppy. I had Peter when I was 18 so ourdoxie, Anneke, was still with us, but quite old. When Peter was born hehad a heart deffect and had surgery at a week old and was in the PICUfor another 3 weeks, so once we got him home we were really protectiveof him. Anneke planted herself in his room when he was napping (whichwas often) and the second he stirred she'd run to get us. She wasalways watching out for him until the time she passed.
