Poor Sophie scratched up her neck this week while scratching. I trimmed her nails at the end of last week but it didn't seem to help much.

I don't bathe my bunns...so what do you do with a bun that has dry skin? It isn't mites or anything...we adopted her from the THS earlier this year and her coat wasn't healthy when we got her. It was very thin and brittle. She moulted a bit but didn't blow her whole coat yet. The skin at the base of the hair shaft is dry and flaky and is obviously itching her. Since the injury was on the back of her neck I put some carbolic salve on it to stop the itch temporarily and help heal the wound. (she can't reach it and since it isn't itching she hasn't been scratching it anymore.)

So what to do with an itchy 9.5 pound rabbit? Ideas?

Badger gets very dry when he is moulting and I use sudocreme and it fixes him right up.

It might be worth getting vet checked for mites or any other conditions, but if he comes out clear, I'm sure sudocreme would help:)

When you say dry and flakey is there a residue like dandruff or powder in the fur?

Has she ever been treated with ivermectin for mites?

It may be that your vet needs to analyse a skin scraping under a microscope to identify any possible problems, there are mites that burrow under the skin and are not visible to the naked eye....these are generally more uncomfortable for the rabbit than surface mites.

It could also *possibly* be an allergy.
