I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to change the system I used to use for my lionheads.

My old system was that each litter had a letter assigned to it - the first litter ever born was litter A, the second litter B, etc. Then in each litter - the odd numbers went to the bucks in order of their pick of being best, second, etc. The even numbers went to the does. So the best doe in my first litter was A2 and the best buck in that litter was A1.

It worked fairly well - once I got up past Z - I went to AA, AB, etc. - and then it went to BA, BB, etc - which I how I remember about how many litters I had.

I'm seeing other systems though - some folks use their rabbitry initials plus a number- or the dam and sire plus a number - or some other system.

What do y'all use? I really should have been tattooing already - but I haven't been able to decide how I wanted to do it.

My first litter, I used the first part of their name.
Copperhead was COP
Cottonmouth was COTT
Sidewinder was SID
Black Mamba was BLA

From now on, I'll be using SN1, SN2, SN3, blahblahblah, unless I feel the urge to tattoo them something different.

My mentor uses a similar method. Although I have seen variations in the rabbit's I've receieved from her. They've always had an L, however. And she seems to be on L#'s. I have L69 from her, and she currently has L81, and L82 up for sale... So... XD

I first started using BSA - Blue Sky Acres, which is my prefix, and then the first initial of the rabbits' name. But then once I started naming kits with the same first initial, that didn't last! lol. You see, that would only be 26 tattoos. :p

So, with my most recent litter, I did one BSALB, 'cause I hadn't used an L. With her littermates, I did DERO, and KAI.

We are changing our rabbitry name really soon, so we'll have a new system/new prefix. I like having my prefix in their ears, because then you know who bred the rabbit (for the most part, :p) without looking at the pedigree! haha.

So for example, if we change our name to Blue Camas Rabbitry (which is probably what it will be), then I'm thinking our tattoo system will be somewhat like BC - then the first initial of the doe and buck, and then a number or symbol...Or maybe just BC and then a number, since once you got four letters and then double digits, that would be a six digit long tattoo...Quite big for Mini Rex ears! :p

ETA: For spelling. :D

I don't have the best system. lol

I used to do BK (my first and middle initials - "Briana Katelyn")I went up to BK15 I believe. But now that I have started over, I use letters from the rabbits name and numbers. So Kira is K1 and Onyx is ONY and stuff like that. I like this way a bit better.

The first rabbit I bought was named Kiddo (by the breeder). The second I bought had no name, so she got named Beatrix. It seemed fitting to name them after the movie. Heck, I might even continue on with those names for a while, since they're my best producing pair out of all the crosses. :biggrin2:

My Pippin is after Peregrin Took from LOTR (which I adore). I LOVE the idea of naming pets after great characters.

my rabbitry name is Presley's lions & lops so I have been doing PLL with a number but I think if I ever get to 100 that would make 6 digits in the ear which would be a lot..... might have to rethink it when I get to that point.

Is there a limit of how many digits can be in an ear?

I use my initials of my rabbitry...Starlight Rabbitry...SR, then a number in sequencial order. ie, SR203, SR204...etc. This works for the Dutch.

For the woolies, I use the same system but I dropped the "R"...there ears are shorter...lol

Well with my ELs I have been using LL (initials for my rabbitry) and the 1st initials of the parents and a certain #...like LLOP1.....but now I have Nethies too and their ears are definitely smaller, not as much work space......so I havent quite worked on a shorter version yet, lol. :p

Our system is a two-letter tag to identify our rabbitry, then a single letter to identify the litter. Then a two-digit code to represent their number within that litter. We start at 00... does are even numbers, bucks are odd numbers. At the rate we breed, we don't expect that any "A" rabbits will still be alive when we have our "Z" litter, so we will reuse the letters.

I am willing to be surprised, though.

Another breeder we know in Flemish uses the second character of his tag to denote color, and like us, uses even numbers for does and odd numbers for bucks, but does not have a character to denote what litter they're from. He uses two alpha characters and four numerics after that, whereas we are 3A/2N.
