I couldn't find a thread relevant in the search... I'm pretty sure some folks asked about this before though. Sorry for repeating :bagheadShould I buy some rolled/Old-fashioned oats? Not instant or steel cut oats right?

Like Quaker oats or something?

Thanks! :)

I got a carton of Quaker Old-Fashioned Oats. It put weight on Nick really nicely. Still trying to get Benjamin bulked up. I use a scooper, so my fingers aren't near the oats when they go in. Too dangerous! The bad thing is, now Nick wants them all the time!

I got old fashioned oats from target. Twice the size, half the price of Quaker. It was on sale. They look good. How much do I feed to a 3 lb rabbit? A teaspoon? Per day?

Thanks!

My bunnies love the Quaker oats, I have one who thinks it's great fun to push all her pellets out of her feed dish so that she can eat the oats first :p

I'd start out with just a sprinkle and then gradually increase until you see him starting to bulk up.

I gave Toby a teaspoon yesterday and he flicked his ear at me, putting the oats on the floor. Not a fan.

I put them in his food bowl and he ate them overnight. I put some in my palm and he didn't care for them. Soon as I put them in his bowl he started to nibble on them. I held an oat in front of Kirby...and well, I got a "sniff, sniff" and a turn of the head. I put a couple in his bowl and he at them overnight as well. How odd. They don't seem to be in love with oats.

I never tried to feed them "plain" I just add them to their pellets. They all seem to like them as there are never any left by the next day.

Interesting i was always afraid to give my bunny's foods too rich in carbs, i guess i have an alternative if i need to fatten them up!

I don't think I would be giving him a whole lot or in a short period of time. Like any healthy weight gain or loss plan, I plan on doing it very slowly to help him along.

I give the shelter bunnies 1 tablespoon twice a week. If they really need to gain weight, I give them some alfalfa.

Yeesh, I thought it might be like a teaspoon at each feeding (twice daily) but I guess it's more like a few a flakes daily LOL I better start making oatmeal for myself or I'm going to have a lot of extra oats... :)

I used to feed Tallulah a teaspoon of oats with her evening pellets so she would stay at a good weight. She was a tiny little girl but loved to eat. The oats always got eaten first! They really are good at plumping bunnies up and maintaining a healthy weight if the bunny tends to be too skinny.
