Well I must be crazy

Well I responded to an ad and came home with 2 lion lop babies, both males. One is a broken black and the other is a siamese sable according to the breeder - but right now he's a silvery black.

The breeder said they are 8 weeks, but I got to thinking andif she is correct on their birth date of 2/2 that would make them almost 6 weeks. They seem to be settling in ok and are eating/drinking.

Does anyone have any advice? I've never had rabbits this young before.

Res...my babies were completly weaned off mom at 6 weeks - eating pellets, hay and small pieces of fresh collard greens (very small pieces) - I think as long as their doing well with their food, it should be no problem. I know people say they shouldn't be seperated before 8 weeks, and that's probably a good idea, but since you have them, just make sure they're getting plenty of food and eating enough and staying warm (if it's cold), etc, etc. and they should be fine (mine are little pigs..who knew such little balls of fluff could eat so much!?)

I haven't given them any greens yet - I wasn't sure if small babies could have them?

They are eating hay with no problem and pellets. She had them outside in a hutch, but mine are all indoors.

I had only intended to get one....but figured 2's company.

I recommend that you don't feed any veggies till there 6 months old. I got a 6 week old angora yesterday. And she is also diving into her pellets and hay.

The only reason I've allowed greens is that I've heard both pro and con about letting youngsters (6mos or younger)sample a bit of greens...granted, I'm VERY sparse with any greens I've give the babies, and if they show any 'spotting' in their droppings, I cut out the small bit I do give - that however has only happened on 2 occasions, but I'm not a fanatic in this regard - I think plenty of Timothy hay and their pellets will do them just lovely


p.s...maybe it's the Irish in me that's tempting' me to sneak those greens in!

I could use some help with names. The broken black has 2 black eyes so I was thinking about naming him after a boxer and I wanted to name the black/siamese sable something siamese-ish or asian inspired.....any ideas?

The House Rabbit Society guide says it's ok to start greens from 12 weeks on. There's no need to wait till 6 months old.
If the mom got greens while she was feeding the babies, they can even nibble on greens from the beginning.

Your two buns are so cute. I had baby bunnies as young as 4 weeks grazing outside and they were tough as nails. Just introduce greens slowly and one at a time.

I also give greens to young rabbits, but in small amounts at the beginning and I don't introduce much at the beginning, usually just a small bit of celery everyday to nibble on.
