Weatherly under the weather... again

Weatherly loves the water so I imagine she will be out in it. I have to launder her wraps that she took off - she is in polo wraps right now. She looks at them and starts stepping backwards as she hasn't quite realized they are attached to her...and you can feel her curiosity - "what's this? Can I take it in my mouth? Can I play with it...oooh it makes noise..."

Yesterday I was filling the water buckets and the pressure stopped like there was a kink in the hose. I stepped out to check and there's Weatherly with the hose in her mouth, shaking it and playing with it.

My first Morgan colt had the same mischievious nature.

With the storm coming in, she was a little squirrely on the crossties but she only broke one of the safety ties and I told her to knock it off and she stood and looked at me as if to say "Uh oh... mom's mad. Better stop."

She's so silly.

Aren't they a hoot? Horses are really smart in some ways.... they "get" when we tell them NO! = Not that they always DO what we say - but they do KNOW! LOL!

My niece has a warmblood now that loves water...... he was being a bad boy and I was using the hose..... I went to spray him and he was all happy about it. *sigh* The big brat!

Yup, Weatherlyhad beenlearning to load prior to a show and I was being patient on a show day - allowed for lots of time and she would get on and get off. Time was ticking and I finally looked her in those big brown eyes and said, "Weatherly, we can't go to the show if you don't get your butt on the trailer."

Guess who walked on and stood, waiting for me to secure her? :banghead

Today when I went out she had her leg wrap in her mouth and she was waving it around - she especially likes if it terrorizes Nefertiti, who is run first, ask questions later. The vet re-checks her leg on the 22nd.

Oh, if she could talk....

Denise

LOL! They sound hilarious! I can just see her playing with the legwrap!

Once, I was lunging Pokie and she got away from me..... saddle, lungeline, everything..... she took off for the back pasture..... FLYING..... and my SIL's horse, Crissy, took off to see what she was doing...... and suddenly the lungeline in the grass got her attention....... It was like watching a cat with a string! She batted at it, chased it, and watched it the whole time! Such a goofball!

I have a mudball of a horse out there today...wraps are clean so hopefully she was laying low last night as she had to be "naked" for the first time since the injury.

Dipper is ticked off because I am exhausted after work and doing Weatherly (this is my busiest time of year until June 29th - the day after graduation). I think I have to try to squeeze a ride in this evening.

Denise

You work in education?

Pokie and Kota were mudballs yesterday too, but Kota is one of those horses that can be a complete pig and you brush him out and he looks like he's just had a bath.... shiney, clean, etc.

We've been busy too and I was in tears last night at one point LOL! I was just overwhelmed and my FIL ticked me off so what was the edge of being down became total floodgates.

I hope Weatherly is still improving. I know my animals are so important to our family....

Yes - school secretary to the principal at a high school - 1200+ kids just in my school alone. Best job I have ever had - love the kids, the teachers and what I do, although from here until the end of June life is in high gear - I do the Awards Night, Leadership Celebration, assist with Dollars for Scholars and put graduation together. That in addition to the day by day stuff working with kids and adults gives to you each day.

So, rabbits and horses are a big relief to me at the end of the day...Weatherly kept her wraps on but I am waiting for it to cool down a bit more so I can ride Dipper - I owe her some attention.

Denise

Awesome! My son has his awards night and then grad night coming up. I imagine it's crazy!

Glad Weatherly is getting on ok. Kota was great tonight. Lexi had a great ride and Pokie seems fine now. Unfortunately, SIL's horse is very sick now. He has a fever again and hosing didn't even bring it down much - with Banamine...

Did the Banamine work? I hope he is OK... hope the vets can figure out what is going on with him.

Hubby and Andy are out of town this weekend - I was cutting the lawn and Weatherly was following me, nose to the ground, looking at the lawn mower blades as best as she could....

Rode Dipper last night and she was good - took all her leads on cue, had a good gallop then lots of grooming, sponged her down with liniment water and let her graze before bringing Weatherly out.

Then, had to get Benn from work at 10:15... my truck needs new brakes and Andy's car was here so I took that, passed by a parked state trooper in town and then noticed he was following me.

Brief check of all systems... lights are on, not speeding, not on the cell phone, had nothing that was alcoholic to drink...what the ****?

Trooper veers off the the right and stays there as he is following me... then he comes back into the road and hits the lights. I greet him with my hands in view, then reach for registration and license and just smiled at him. He goes to his car with my information, I call Benn's manager to tell him I am delayed due to the trooper and wait for the verdict. He finally makes it back to my car.

"Do you know why I stopped you, ma'am?"

"No, I do not."

"Your passenger taillight is broken. Way too much white light showing..." (really wanted to comment "that is the heavenly light shining through my butt" but refrained...)

He disappears again, comes back with a ticket and some more questions "Where are you headed?"

"To pick up my son from work at the mall." (Again, wanted to say to meet the mother ship but figured I'd get locked up as a looney...)

"Where did you come from?"

Wanted to say a galaxy far, far, away but again figured I'd be in trouble so I told him my house in Bloomfield.

I ask him a few polite questions on the processing of the ticket and off I went on my merry way. After my friend died of breast cancer earlier that day, this was just a mere speed bump in the road of life and I will get over it and through it.

Amazing what maturity does for a person. I even thanked the trooper and wished HIM a good night. I am sure he was baffled by that one....

Denise

Man! You've had a rough couple of weeks!
Yes, Harley's temp is back down and he looks much better in the eyes and stuff.... you know how they look so bland when they are sick? he's perky!

Watching the Preakness now - rooting for Rachel Alexandra...I am not a fan of horse racing as they are just babies here in the US when they go for these races... I watched superfilly Ruffian break down tragically in her match race back in 1975 and Eight Belles's race in last year's Kentucky Derby...

Rachel Alexandra is the same age as Weatherly and Weatherly injured herself just playing with her friend Nefertiti in the field... I told the vet that "Weatherly is a Morgan - they are supposed to be tough and lower maintenance than a Thoroughbred." The vet laughed and said "She's a baby so all bets are off."

I know those Thoroughbreds are highly conditioned young athletes but I could not imagine putting Weatherly or Neffie through equivalent training at the age of two or three... (they do not have the mental capability in my opinion not to mention they are still growing). It took my mini Freedom until her seventh year before she was mentally ready to handle a jumping course - most folks would have given up on her as a jumper but she placed well last year in the Area One show for minis/Shetlands - her ears were forward and she charged at the fences with amazing confidence...something she did not have as a youngster. She made a few mistakes but was very pleased as she exited the course. My Mercy beat her.

Then there are the freaks like my mini Mercy who had the mental ability and was beating older, champion horses in the halter obstacle classes at the age of two and three and as she matured, she still rules the hunter and jumper courses so I guess there are the freaks out there that cause us to think outside the box... people doubted me, a new mini owner and my unknown filly could do it but they did not know Mercy.

Mercywas not allowed to compete in a trail trial with big horses a few years back (I asked the host but they declined her entry) but I know under mini rules, she would be a competitor as I cannot touch her or bribe her through obstacles - riders can at least steer with legs and reins... Mercy does it because she wants to. Mercy will be 15 on June 21st. Talk about discrimination!

Good luck, Rachel Alexandra!

Weatherly is waiting for her time out on the grass to get her leg hosed...but she has to wait just a bit longer.

Denise

Good race... Rachel Alexandra won.

Weatherly's leg finally looks good under the wraps today - swelling and soft spots are down at the moment but wraps are in the wash due to the storms we have had today and they were mud soaked... off to the barn to hose and rewrap in the polo wraps while the others get clean.

With the bad weather, she was not ready to rip about as she has been... something to be said for bad weather.

Glad to hear SIL's horse is on the mend - if he has the spark in his eyes, he has to be feeling better.

Denise

I was very pleased with the race. Again, Mind that Bird did very well.

I am on both sides of the fence with racing. I know there are people who really don't care about their race horses, but then those who absolutely adore and care for theirs.

The guy who worked Dakota for us this spring is a TB trainer. He has a track, Kota liked running on it LOL! and Kota was in the TB and champion barn at his place. His best friend was a 2 year old filly TB and she was adorable! She LOVES to run! but I agree they are just so young at that age to work them so hard. One of the TB geldings was HUGE and 3 years old and he was strong and could take on most anything. There was another 2 year old filly who was the same. She flies, she loves to run and I'm sure she loves being on the racetrack. So, I guess I think it depends on the horse as to how they manage.

I do like TB's but my favorite horses are the Quarter Horse. It's what I've always been around mostly. My niece just adopted a TB and he's so cute and sweet, and then she also adopted a big warmblood..... he's a goober! LOL! She rides english for Purdue. They downsized their barn. Lexi has never done English on a regular basis.... she likes it but not into it as much as she's into the Western Pleasure and now gaming thing. She's driving me nuts now with running Kota hard.... he loves it too..... now to get the barrels out and begin practicing.... should be interesting - he doesn't care for barrels much. :rollseyesHe'd rather hang out and eat Oreo Dunkers.....

Just glad that everyone survived the race...

I have never done the barrels but they look like fun - my first horse was a QH/Arab cross and she was a wonderful little mare.

I also had the chance to ride a beautiful buckskin QH in a show - he gave me my confidence back after I tooka bad fall with my own mare.

That family also had a daughter of Impressive who died from the disease he carried - she was only 6 and came up to the fence, started trembling and dropped dead at the gate...she was beautiful and a talented hunter.

I have been partial to Morgans and when I had the chance to purchase Weatherly as a weanling, I jumped on it. It has been fun watching her grow.

Dipper and I got out today and had a good ride. The colder air made her ready to go. Of course, Weatherly was chasing Andy on the four wheeler and he was nowhere near the pen but she reared, leaped into the air, bucked and took off....I set her up with a lot of hay in the turnout stall so I hope she decides to lay low tonight.

Denise

You definitely need to post photos of them! That's so sad about the mare with Impressive Syndrome :( That's always worried me. I don't think I'd want a horse with a lot of Impressive lines. We have Doc Bar and Poco Bueno.... foundation bred horses. Not the best for Western Pleasure but fun as all get out to play on!

Lexi rode Dakota today and jaws dropped! he took off so fast it scared my one niece.... then she realized that it was intentional. She was riding also and on her really lazy warmblood LOL!

We worked on the run in stall today. Put limestone chips in and packed it - Kota and Pokie are mad at me ..... they want in their stall but it's nice out and they can hang out under their tree if they want ..... that stall has to dry really well. It's made a huge difference in the ability to keep their stall clean. We put a layer in last week and it rained and NO RAINWATER seeped in! YAY!

We had to do a French drain in my run in last Valentines Day and it was the best gift I ever got for that day - and this year the stall is still dry.

Cool here today and a bit too tired after work...but getting my nuzzles was worth it!

Vet rescheduled her check for next Tuesday rather than this Friday... Weatherly is still surviving,

Denise

Oh, we call those Dry wells here. I had to look it up LOL! We have a big dry well in the edge of our yard.

My hubby also dug out the run-in stall - every year it would turn into an indoor swimming pool. He put the drain tiles in with two of his friends and then put the crusher run and the mats on top. It has survived a soggy spring here...

Off to the barn...

Thanks,

Denise
