Farrier was out to trim my horses and to check Weatherly as up until today she has had no swelling in her leg and I thought it was the hoof (the hoof is clear and clean)but farrier said it is now her tendon... it is right below her knee where the swelling and heat is and she is tender to the touch. She plays hard (galloping, bucking and rearing) with Nefertiti (my Shetland). I will be cold hosing her and wrapping her front legs until I can get the vet out tomorrow.

I was hoping to do some more slow work with her (I just sit on her and walk her) but that looks like it will be on hold for some time...I know they take a long time to heal and I do not have a lot of experience with tendons other than a horse at a stable I worked at who had a bowed tendon from playing in the field). Weatherly does play hard with her companion, Nefertiti.

All the horses were good but Weatherly came up to us and had this look on her face that she needed help - she waited right outside the stall where Dipper was getting her feet trimmed and she kept nosing me.

Time to get changed and fire up the hose. Please keepWeatherly in your thoughts - I thought she would have a career as my eventing horse but this injurymay cause me to have to look at another, not so strenuouscareer for her...I have had her since she was a weanling and she is a very sweet horse - I just love her to pieces.

Cold hosed Weatherly's bad leg for 30 minutes - she loved being out eating grass and she likes the water/hose.

Horse friends of mine suggesting putting a poultice on it but with my own elbow tendon problems, I can't tolerate heat - it has to be cold so I will do another hosing a bit later.

Calling the veterinarian tomorrow in hopes of getting an appointment...wish me luck!

Poor thing :( I sure hope it's something simple... maybe just a bruise from a kick or something? Kota has some lumps on his chest in the shape of a hoof.... seems Pokie and a horse named Justy from the racing barn thought he needed decorated...... :expressionless

I'm keeping good thoughts coming your way...... I know how stressful this can be! and you have enough to worry aboutwith herhaving had the abscess....

I'd not put anything on it until the vet comes. I wouldn't give her any bute or anything either..... SIL told me to give Pokie some but I told the vet I didn't so he could see her without it...... and he TOTALLY agreed.

I worry about all of mine too and yours LOL!

I hate when animals are in pain or whatever cause they can't tell us. When you have a horse like Weatherly come up and give you that nudge and looking at you with those big beautiful eyes....... "Mama my leg has an ouch!" ...... it breaks your heart!

These giant beings that could trample us - instead, look to us forhelp and when we can't fix it right quick it just kills me!

I did not do anything other than the cold hosing so the vet can see what we have going on - she will be here in 1/2 an hour and it looks more swollen today.

I have enough stuff to medicate and wrap a barn full of horses - I wanted to be prepared for whatever I need to do.

Wish me and Weatherly luck - we are going to need it!:pray::pray:

She could just crush me - I went out the the barn last night and she was lying down -she let me sit next to her for quite a while and she just nosed me gently.

When she had the fever in the spring and then the abscess, she had that look of "Please help me." When she isolates herself from the herd, I know she feels like poop.... she is my 15.2 hand big baby....

More to come...

Poor girl. I just got home from the barn a bit ago and I am going back. Pokie hasn't blown the abscess so we've decided to pack it again in magnapaste. The polident did a good job cleaning it! Her hoof is shiney!

Bad news tho, whatever SIL's horse has - Pokie now has. She's got a snotty nose like no tomorrow! :XI don't know what is going on but it's time to have it stop!

This thing they have is a lot worse than the runny nose Kota had back in April. I thought I'd puke when she blew her nose out........

Oh, I don't do well with horse snots.... hope Pokie recovers from that quickly!

Vet saw Weatherly - she was not happy that it was the digital flexor tendon but still was optimistic that she will recover 100% enough to jump and show/..said babies do these kind of things. She was off when I trotted her out - not noticably but enough for the vet and I to see it.

She needs to be hosed 3x a day for 10 minutes, dry the leg then apply DMSO and let that dry before putting on standing wraps on her front legs. She will need to be rechecked in 2 weeks and the vet hopes to have a better idea of whether the tendon was "whacked" or whether she bowed it.

Weatherly never wore wraps before, so once she was back in the pen, she was trying to check the wraps out and she kept backing up as she tried to look at them. Her buddy Nefertiti was also fascinated by the bright red wraps.

In two weeks, I know if Weatherly will be off for the summer or whether we can resume the starting process.

Thanks for your good thoughts-

Denise

LOL I can just see her trying to look at those wraps! Horses are so cute when they are interested in something like that!

I am sure praying for you guys! it's been a rough one for us both huh? I'm taking care of the barn this weekend. I enjoy it but I have 2 snotting and one with a bad hoof..... *sigh*

Although, as much as I hate nasty noses, I will take that over colic. After my Belgian mare died of anterior enteritis any time I have a sick one I am in a panic but luckily the vet is good at "treating" me, too.

Denise

When my rescued Belgian mare contracted anterior enteritis while I was out of the country, I could not imagine a worse nightmare. She bravely hung on until I got home and 12 hours later died in front of me. Many folks said she hung on to say thank you for the love we gave herfor three years after she had been rescued from a home where she was seriously neglected... she is buried in my yard with a pine tree as the marker.

My vet is very sensitive to this and treats me as well as the horses.

We have had high winds, thunder and lightning all day - winds sustained at 30 mph and Weatherly was frisky - her leg looked good until I had to change the wraps and she could not resist ripping it up when she was free with Neffie while I was rerolling her bandages... arrrgh - babies!

Denise

Weatherly's tendon is not as large as it was... but I have had to deal with her getting bored and taking her wraps off and depositing them in the mud where she trampled them.

Did more cold hosing and wrapping today and when Andy was on the 4 wheeler, Weatherly could not resist running and chasing him, even though he was nowhere near the fence/ pasture.

She looks better to me on the move but she freaks me out - I am worried she is going to do more damage, but I have her wrapped and padded pretty well. If I confine her, she is worse than out in the field. Aarrgh, baby behavior!

Denise

Awesome! Pokie's doing better as well. I'm not sure there's an abscess at all... I think she kicked something and got sore. She was out rolling, running and bucking... oh yeah.... she's in pain....... NOT!

Weatherly's tendon is softer today with a little bit of swelling below - but she is not off. She was wiggling when I did her wraps and picked her feet - thrush in 3 of 4....

I am hoping it warms up - we had frost the past few nights and the girls are back in blankets.

How is Pokie and your SIL's horse?

Denise

Doing GREAT thanks. Harley is perking up, eating and actually went out with the others. Pokie was out rolling in the dirt and raced Kota to the back pasture when I opened the gate for them (the grass pasture!!!) and seemed MUCH happier outside.

Now comes the rain.... *sigh*

Pokie's got hers still on. Tomorrow our Farrier is coming out. So, I won't do anything with it til tomorrow.

Hope she's ok with the rain....... Pokie will be a muddy mess! :cry1:
