My furry best friend Hocus Pocus, is about 3 years old. We found him wandering the streets of our busy neighborhood 2 years ago. While we tried very hard to find his family, no one claimed him. He came to us potty trained and full of joy with lots of affectionate love. We feed him Timothy Hay, Premium Food, the occasional parsley or kale treats and lots of water.

Sadly, a few weeks ago I noticed a lump under his chin. He wasn't behaving differently, but it seemed a little sensitive to the touch. Upon the visit to the Vet, we learned he had a dental abscess. While I owned many bunnies when I was younger, this was the first I heard of how serious a problem this could be. I quickly learned from our Vet that it's hereditary, and that rabbits lack the enzyme to fight the bacteria off. So, the Vet suggested anti-biotics to start. We did the anti-biotics, but the lump grew back in a few days.

After another chat with the Vet, we learned more details about the chronic nature of this issue and how difficult it can be for the bunny. While he is still happy and eating well, he's starting to grind his teeth a little. But, by all appearances he is still his happy go lucky self.

Based on the last Vet conversation, we're looking at a $700 vet bill to try to fix him up - she says "if we are lucky" and a 2 month open suture that will need daily treatment. She said beyond that, it could get very expensive and that he may not get well regardless and complications will likely set in. If we don't do anything nature will take it's course. If we do, it could put him in more pain and we'll lose him anyways. (this was not encouraging to me at all)

We are heartsick over this, I have tears in my eyes as I write this and don't know what to do. Do we move forward with surgery, or wait it out - or let him go to greener fields. Any thoughts would be so greatly appreciated.

has he only been on one round of antibiotics? would it be possible for the vet to do a culture and try a more targeted antibiotic (I'm guessing a broad-spectrum one was given the first time)?

our library of rabbit-savvy vets can be found here: http://www.rabbitsonline.net/f21/
with a quote of $700 to "try" to fix him up, I think it's worth looking around for a second opinion - you may very well find a lower price and a more promising treatment plan rolled into one.

I'm so sorry you and your bunny are having to go through all this - I hope you can find a way to get him better! ><

Thank you for your replies, this has been so stressful. The Vet had cleaned out the infection, before the anti-biotic treatment. I was amazed at how quickly it grew back. I'll take a look at getting a second opinion. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I have read of people having success with aggressive antibiotic treatment with bicillin injections. Here are a couple links with info about it.

With him grinding his teeth from the pain, if your vet hasn't already put your rabbit on pain meds, then you will want to do that right away so that he doesn't also develop a digestive problem.

It is very hard and stressful having a sick pet. I really hope you are able to find something that helps your little bun.

Don't want to be a storm cloud, but see if they can do a needle aspiration and culture. Five years ago one of our "boys" had an abscess, or so we thought. It came back really quickly and when we had our vet check it more thoroughly it turned out to be bone cancer. We got another 4 months with our big boy and then had to make that dreaded last trip. You are both in our thoughts and prayers. Blessed be.

I am not sure what your vet meant about rabbits lacking some enzyme needed to fight bacteria. That doesn't make medical sense to me and I've never heard of it before. Rabbits do have weaker immune systems, but it is possible to treat bacterial infections of this type. Aggressive antibiotics are a good idea. Do you know what you've already given? I would definitely try another round of a different antibiotic before going to some of the more serious surgical treatments. The links I would have posted are already here.

My bunny is 1 year old and also has dental problems, and he had an abcess on chin. My vet gave him antibiotics and after 2 weeks she cut open the abcess and took all the fluid out. She said he is gonna be ok now, as long as we keep his front teeth the right lenght. So we have to go almost every 2 weeks to the vet so that she shortens his teeth. i live in Slovenia (thats in europe :D) and i gave 60€ alltogether for the vet. She is realy cheap and a great vet.
Now after the surgery and all that stuff :D he is happier, he eats more and i know in my heart hes gonna be a healthy bunny.
