My big black cat, Crazy, (and yes, the name fits!) started having problems AGAIN yesterday. She has a long history of having urinary infections every few months, and I saw yesterday she was having trouble going pee. I wanted to call the vet right then, but Hubby said, "Do you know how much an emergency visit on Memorial Day would cost?" I was like, "Um, so what?! It's my kitty!" But anyway, I had her in first thing this morning, and sure enough the x-rays showed something like three or four stones in her bladder.

I took her to the vet I use for my bunnies instead of the one we normally take our cats to, and guess what? The first vet has been telling us wrong the whole time, saying she didn't have any infection, it was "just sludge/crystals in her urine" that was giving her trouble. So we are doing the blood work and surgery this afternoon, it had to wait until later because she ate this morning before we went. So before 10am I had already spent $350 and my poor kitty thinks I abandoned her! At least they didn't have to catheterize her to get a urine sample, she peed everywhere when they were trying to get the x-rays done!

I should have known it was gonna be a bad day when I got bitten AND peed on both while I fed the rabbits this morning. :?

Oooh I am sorry to hear :(I don't understand the first vet though... Crystals in the urine in not a good thing :?It's actually very dangerous because it can block just like now no?It's one of the first things i learned in my course. I am glad you have a different vet now. I really hope she feels better soon :rose:

I'm so sorry to hear about Crazy! One of the girls I work with has dealt with this in her male cat - and has found a great balance between, food and a supplement; which I'll get her "recipe" for success with crystals and post it later here.. Good luck in the interim!

Hey Giant Giants, here is the info from my coworker that has a male cat w/crystal problems:

"I feed Grady Royal Canin SO. I do the dry and they just started making pouches of wet with gravy that he LOVES!! The regular cans of wet, he didn't like. This food works great. The first food I tried was the Science Diet XD. It totally didn't work and Grady had stones within a year. With his current diet and supplements, he has been stone free for 2 years!! The supplements are Urocit K - 5. It is potassium citrate that you do need a prescription for. I get it at 1800petmeds instead of the vet.....I save about $50.00 a bottle that way, a bottle is about $39.00 and lasts about a 1 1/2 months. I give my 16 pound male cat 1 1/4 tablets twice a day. I also give him 15mg of vitamin B6 that I have compounded at a compounding pharmacy. It is liquid with fish flavor. That runs me $42 a month, but you might be able to find it cheaper. I believe the B6 was the key...but all the elements together is what I would recommend. Here is a website that also mentions the B6. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/bladder_stones.html"

Good luck and hope this help and further hope your kitty starts to feel better..

Thanks, everybody. I'm really chewing my nails now, the vet was supposed to call me when she was out of surgery, but he didn't call. So when it was about 5:15 here, and the clinic is supposed to close at 5:30, I called them to ask. They said they were jsut now getting her into surgery! So now I have to wait a couple more hours to find out how it went.

:pullhair: We need a nail-biting emoticon, BTW.....

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about Crazy. I hope she is ok. I've been through that with a cat and bladder stones and surgery and it is very stressful. I hope she recovers well.

My cat now eatsonly the Royal Canin SO food that is available from vets which Juliew19 mentioned earlier and I think it must really work. My cat hasn't had a relapse in about 7 years now.

Sorry to hear about Crazy...poor little thing....how is she doing?

Crazy is home now, the surgery went well. Dr. Drake said he was right, there were three stones in her bladder, which are being sentoff to a lab to find out what type they are. She is a little sore, but she has had her pain meds this morning so she isn't in too bad a shape. Our household is probably going to be pretty unhappy for a while, though, as there are currently more cats than people living here and all of them have to get onto a feeding schedule, instead of being free fed like before. Since Crazy has to be on a special food from now on, and we definatly can't afford to feed all seven cats the special stuff, soshe will get fed in a separate room while the others get the regular stuff.

Hope she continues to get better. :)

I know! That special food is expensive but now that I just have 2 cats, both are getting it. Still, I think I pay $38 for the large bag. I'm glad Crazy is home and doing better.
