Urgent, sick rabbit, need advice from experienced folks. - RIP

Hi everyone,

After a long early morning conversation with our vet yesterday we decided it was time to say goodbye. The quality of life just was not there for her anymore. I'm heartbroken but she went peacefully and I'm glad she's no longer suffering. We did in-home euthanasia so her last moments were spent cuddled up in the little bed we'd made her with warm towels and a hot water bottle and we gave her lots of treats and pets and kisses. I can't believe how attached we grew in such a short time. She stole my heart and will always be a part of our family.

Thank you all for your help and kindness these past couple days. Unfortunately the damage was done and we could not justify her continued suffering with little to no hope of recovery. Her body was shutting down. My husband and I are devastated and dealing with confusing feelings of grief, guilt, deep sadness, etc.

She was very, very special and will live in our hearts forever.

I am so sorry for your loss. May Bean binky free while looking down upon you and your husband making sure everything is okay with the two of you.

You did everything possible. Sometimes it is all we can do to try to save our bunnies. You have done the right thing. I will let my friend know what happened. Has my friend been helpful at all?

the weakness may be because as she is not using them that the muscles in her legs arent working at their best. I may be completely wrong but I hope im not because some of the other thing that can cause it are very serious

If you decide to adopt a new bunny I'd advise getting pet insurance and asking their advice on rabbit specialists within your area. We're with Pet Plan and they were excellent at finding us a local vet with a neighbouring animal hospital specialized in treating bunnies. Had we taken her to the local standard cat/dog vet they probably wouldn't have been able to do half as much as what they did at the emergency animal hospital and she wouldn't have lasted the night.

Geekgirl, unfortunately the "daytime" vet we see is the only true rabbit-savvy vet in our city. There is no 24 hour/emergency rabbit-savvy option here for us. Believe me if there was, that's where she would have been. We did our best with the resources available to us. It is frustrating when people keep telling me to find another vet for the overnight care but there literally isn't one within 2 hours of here. That said, she made it through her stay at the 24 hour place and spent her last two days at home with us being kept warm and cuddly and showered with love.

This has been a very difficult loss for us and while we look forward to welcoming another rabbit into our home, we need to wait a bit and do some healing first.

Wow, I'm so sorry for your loss. I just read over this whole thread. At least you were able to give her a good home for awhile and make up for some of the horrors she experienced prior to her coming into your life. You can take some solace in that.
