Uncontrollable Chewing

Im back from vacation, sitting with Drake. Every once in a while (Every month or so) he starts going crazy and starts chewing his cage. He doesn’t show any other symptoms. Teeth grinding occurs when he’s sleeping or resting and I can’t hear it (I posted a forum said it’s probably just teeth purring). He is a year old. Is it just because his teeth are growing or should I be worried? I gave him a toy that he is destroying right now.

I know the chewing will happen in the future but for now he has stopped.

Maybe give him more chewing toys? My Bernie loves destroying cardboard boxes she looks so happy and busy and like if she had a deadline she keeps working until it's all in ruins )

Another question — too lazy to make another thread: When I sit by drake when he’s laying down I see him tooth chattering. I can only hear it if I am a few inches away from him. If I open his cage window and stick my head in to say hi, he stops. He does plenty of binkys, is energetic, eats well, drinks well, poops well. Is this also something I should be concerned of?

Welp , my rabbit chews huge holes in her wooden cage , so i repaired the damage and gave her a bit of cardboard a day .
She loves to chew on cardboard . i hope it helps , i don't really know

Soft grinding of teeth is contentment. Hard grinding means pain.

The chewing of his cage sounds like he's looking for something to do. It's a good idea to rotate toys and give him new things to explore. That helps keep him from being bored. Remember that since he is outside, he spends a lot of time by himself.

Try stuffing some empty TP tubes with hay. He may like that.

I know my buck chewed up the cage, during the time he didn’t have access to a pen. He had pent up energy and only first he got enough space and plenty of toys the cage chewing stopped [emoji5]

My rabbit was an excessive chewer and would destroy boxes, chew toys and really anything in her path. Then I got her a mate and she rarely chews now. I think she was lonely and bored and trying to tell me. The only time she chews now is when she wants attention. Could be yours either is lonely or bored.
Chewing is really nothing to be concerned about, not a health issue unless he is grinding teeth as Blue eyes says.
I would take it as he is trying to tell you something. You just got back from vacation, perhaps he was lonely when you away? I was amazed by the change in my rabbit once I got her a buddy. Her destructive behavior literally went away overnight once they were bonded.

Before it happened he was more energetic than before, and spun around his pen. His cage door was open but he wasn’t showing any interest of coming out.

Could be, right now I’m on vacation for a day but someone is coming to let drake out. I’m working out some agreement with my parents to get him a new cage. He destroys his toys really quickly. Would getting him a hay rack help to entertain him, and also get him new toys until further notice? Any cheap, big, good cages on Facebook market I can get that will last long term? (most of the good cheap ones were too cheap to be true)

Hay racks are entertaining; but, you just end up with hay everywhere. How big is his cage, could be he is just bored. I still think he is trying to tell you something. I got a large dog cage for my bunnies and added a second floor with a ramp, and the cage is connected to a large X-pen so they have room to run. The large dog cages are pretty in-expensive and really sturdy. I store a big tub of hay on top of mine no problem it's that sturdy. Just some ideas... you have to find what is right for you and your space.

Yes his cage is small. That I know. I’m looking for a better cage on Facebook market. I try to let him out a lot until I can find the cage.

Perhaps when you get a larger cage his chewing will lessen.
