Errr at what age do the babies start eating solids???

i gave Flore some small pieces and the babies ran for it and fought over the apples and I was freaking cause I am scared it might make them sick. What should I do? Should I take Flore out to give er a treat?

I am not a big fan of giving the babies fruits and greens at a young age....but supposedly if their mama is used to having them on a fairly regular basis - it is ok to give them some.

I give my babies cheerios (I know - real nutritious) and oatmeal and hay and of course pellets...

My babies are now sitting in the food bowl on the food (guarding it from mom) while they try to eat it themselves...

Oh I took the apples away :p I wasn't going to risk it. :? I just didn't realize they were going to eat solids already. Man they grow fast! :?

I have always feed my babies what mom gets. I don't give much more than what mom would get, maybe up to a serving and a half. I have yet to have problems with babies getting upset tummies.

I will feed a new food, a small amount. Then monitor for a few days then move on to adding another one. I find that when they are still nursing, there tummies don't get as upset as if they where introduced when fully weaned and never exposed.

Rather than pieces of fruit, I would suggest leafy greens to start them on. A few pieces each then wait a couple days.

But, in the end, it all comes down to what you are comfortable with. Use your best judgement.

With my babies, I assumed they were too small. I always give my does their veggies (baby spinach leaves, baby carrots) in the mornings. Much to my surprise, they hijacked her veggies and began eating it at a VERY young age..like when their heads was the biggest part of them. None ever had any tummy problems, and mom took to waiting at the cage door for me, hijacking her food from my hand directly, hunkering down over it and eating it, while I distracted the youngsters. They were all still in the big cage with her, before I separated them off, so I would say they were all under 4 weeks of age.

Hope that helps..

Our babies usually start eating solid food at 3 1/2 to 4 weeks.Kind of depends when Momma will let them out of the nest box! I give my mom's their treats seperate. Most of them don't mind a turn in the run pens with their vege's and fruits. Or I hand feed the does. I prefer not to give the babies vege's or fruits when they first start on solid food, especially the Flemish. JMHO

The only thing my babies get are pellets, oatmeal and hay. Mom takes a

break from the babies to eat anything else.

I wasn't wanting to give the babies any food. They were born on December 18. i didn't think they even could eat solid food :? Heh! Just took me by surprise :? They're doing exactly what Zin said.

Are they being fed enough by the mom???

As long as they are fat and sassy the doe is feeding them enough. As soon as

they come out of the nestbox they will start nibbling on solid food. I have some

about the same age and they are starting to eat hay and nibble at the oats if

they can beat their mother to them.

My babies have always started munchin' and crunchin' on hay around 1 1/2 to 2 wks old and pellets around 3 wks. I'd stay away from greens and other such treats until they're 3-4 mos of age. Longer if they're a larger breed. ESPECIALLY with foods high in water content like lettuce, apples, carrots, etc... as they're so tiny they can get diarrhea from too much water and can die. I've heard of it happening to other people.

We never give our babies greens. And if we did give them a small amount it was when they were around 8 weeks. When they went to new homes we told the owners not to give them any greens for at least two weeks.
