Ok here is the official scenario...

She had 10 kits.. first time mom.. she wasn't feeding them, so I have them, just bring her in for feedings.

She had a bit of blood several hours after delivery, so we gave her 1CC of Pen G injectable twice..

She has pretty much gone off feed. Right after delivery she ate ravenously. She did eat a smattering of rolled oats/crimped barley and wheat germ oil today. Like a few bites. She isn't drinking, but I did get her to eat some lettuce..she has unlimited timothy hay.

Her poops are still round, but very squishy, so I assumed it was from the PenG.. as antibiotics tend to affect even my tummy.

Her hiney was caked with urine and poop residue.. and getting matted. I tranced her today, I cleaned what I could, then trimmed off alot, and cleaned even more. She actually smelled 100% better, no odor at all, and looked better. While I had her tranced, her tummy was noisy. Not hungry noisy.. just noisy.

I did get some pumpkin, and some pepto down her, as well as I syringed her pedialyte and water.

When I brought her in to nurse, she was still clean, but she absolutely reeked. I mean funky. I think I need to clean her scent glands.. I dunno.

Do you all think maybe I need to go get her some gas drops?

Does the PenG affect the poop consistency?

Am I being paranoid and the rabbit hates seeing me coming?

Do I just need to leave her be for now?

hopefully somebody more experienced will step up here, butshe maybe headed into an imbalance with the antibiotics, is it a stinky cecal smell? you're on a slippery slope with that. i wouldn't over treat her.

i'd think at this point the best thing would be Bene-bac and not much else beyond hay and water.

she sounds gassy, I'd keep gas meds handy, but see how she does on her own for a bit.

hope she's okay.

sas

Yeah, it's the stinky cecal smell..

She has unlimited timothy hay, and water right now, which has a 4 way acid pack in it.. which she is not interested in.. do you think I need to go change it?

Maybe I should offer her another water bottle of regular water as well..see if she will drink either.

Maybe she is just persnickety.

I forgot, I did get some Bene-Bac in her today...

Do you think the whole giving birth thing just really threw her system for a loop?

Well I honestly don't know and I hate guessing.

She's a nursing mother, so she should have a huge appetite and she should be getting unlimited pellets.

I know that Ensure is also a possibility, but overtreatment is an issue, so I don't know.

I really hope Pamor somebodycan jump in here.

sas :?

The first doe I had bred died from stasis after giving birth. I'm not exactly sure what exactly caused it, but she had similar symptoms.

She stopped eating, had runny smelly poops and stopped nursing her babies.

This was back when I was not as educated about rabbits and what got me into researching them.

I would try to get food into her and treat her for stasis. Treat her as if she doesn't have the babies, do what you can to get her eating and drinking. Keep trying to nurse the babies on her so she doesn't get mastitis, but she may stop producing milk in which case you will have to foster off the babies to another mom.

I am interested to see what others have for advice. I don't have all that much experience with these types of situations.

Well, I just went and gave her an additional water bottle with straight water in it. Keep in mind this doe does NOTHING in front of me. As I was hanging the bottle she began drinking from it. I checked underneath her cage.. she has poopys!! Still not normal.. dark.. but not runny or moisty looking.

I checked her.. she does not reek anymore. I went ahead and gave her minimal feed. I went to the window after closing the barn door.. she did eat, and went right back to drinking... so.. hopefully... we made some progress!!

She really should be eating by now. The Benebac is excellent, yeah... the PenG can cause a bit of gastric upset. But it shouldn't be nasty smelling. And she should be cleaning herself.

I'mconcerned now. I'd give her a bit of Nutrical, twice a day. It'll keep her going. See what you can tempt her with to get her to eat. Keep her hydrated.

Any chance you have a decent vet to consult? That large a litter may have done some internal damage. I'd be worried about a ruptured spleen or damage to a uterine horn.

Doesn't stasis indicate a lack of gut movement? Her's are very obviously moving...

I may be wrong, I may wake up tommorrow and she's gone.. but I think the PenG threw her system for a loop.

I took someone's advice and I think it affected her badly..

That's good news! I don't think she has stasis... and you've been getting a little bit in her. If you can keep the Benebac up for a few days, it should help a lot.

Gut sounds aren't always reliable for telling if a rabbit is having GI problems or not- sometimes the peristalses go crazy and into hyper-mode, moving very fast. It can be indicative of stasis coming on.

I just went back out.. shes drinking water still.. and ate an apple wedge, and attacked a carrot..

So I think..

Yeah I am paranoid..

WOAL!!!! How did you come up with that dosing? What is the composition of your drug? Pen G should be 150K unitsof Procaine and 150K units of Benzathine for an effective dosage of 300K units of drug per mL. How much does she weigh? A dosage of 1cc of Pen G is appropriate for a rabbit of over 17 pounds. That is a huge amount of drug. Standard dosing of Pen G is approx. 40K units per kilogram of weight. A rabbit of 2kg (about 4.5 pounds) is normally dosed .25cc (75K units----1/4 of the 300K units of drug per mL of Pen G)SQ every other day. And correct dosing of this drug will not result in any GI issue. I have injected bottle after bottle of this stuff and never had any GI issues. But at that high of a dose....it is quite possible. I would really like to see this rabbit at a rabbit savvy vet for a physical. And I would leave the Pen alone for now. As with any drug...even though you can buy it OTC....it's nothing to play with. They all carry side effects. At the very least...she needs a probiotic...I would suggest Bene-Bac as I have found it is by far the best of the bunch.

Oh....forgot something. When you say you gave her "pepto"...does that mean the Pepto-Bismol pink stuff? If so....I don't think that would be such a good idea. Right now....I would be trying to get her to eat as much hay as possible....and drink as much as possible.
