So, I live in San Diego and the housing market has made a ridiculous turn to the ugly and there are foreclosures popping out left and right. Therefore, the apartment market has gone up and landlords are taking advantage of the situaition and hiking up the rent.

So, luckily i have not turned in my 30 days yet becuase i had a feeling about the housing issue. I have been looking non stop since early december and so far every apartmenti apply for has been snatched up before i could get to it. My budget is $800 for a one bedroom. Its almost impossible to find an apt in a decent area at that rate. In fact.... the dangerous areas in san diego (with dirty apt) are renting their one bedrooms for $750-$800. Most one bedrooms are running between $900-$1700.

In any case, today i went to look at one bedroom that was going for $750 in a good area. The apt was small but nice with a small private patio. It said it allowed cats and so i thought perhaps they would consider a rabbit. I asked the landlord passively "So, would you consider a smaller furry such as a hamster, guinea pig and or rabbits?" and he said "No, no and especially no to the rabbits" Of course it sparked my curiosity as to why he did not like rabbits. I asked him and he said "Becuase they attract mice, every single time i have allowed a rabbit in here they always attract mice, those pesky ground animals." So, i was shocked. I havent never heard of a rabbit attracting mice. The only thing i could think of is that perhaps they are attracted by the hay?

Has anyone ever encountered a mice issue with rabbits in houses/apartments?

Sorry you having such a difficult time apartment hunting, we have friends out there... housing is crazy! I can't say much about the mice issue since I live on a farm and it's a given here, but since the guy allows cats, just tell him you'll get a cat to counter the mouse problem :)

I think it's the hay and feed that attracts them, but I can't imagine a clean bun area would attract mice, so I am surprised he would say this... A lot of people have problems with rabbits that don't make sense. I've had renters tell me I can have dogs, but not rabbits, that doesn't make sense to me at all.

Good luck with your searching!
