Two questions

If Marlow has his own room- he shares my office, and I don’t lock him in the cage at night - it’s a large dog kennel- do I need the cage at all?

Also- has anyone had any success at getting cats to coexist with rabbits? If he’s in the carrier he doesn’t seem to care if one of the cats come up to him. They’re just looking. But I let him out in the hall- the cats couldn’t come there at that time and he heard one make a noise and he ran back to hide in the room. So I haven’t tried it again yet.

You don't really need the cage at that point. I just keep my cage even though my bunny is free roamed for emergencies and use it as a hidey house sometimes. My rabbit likes our cat but our cat doesn't really like him its an ehh relationship mostly they just don't care so haven't really had any success there.

If I don’t need that cage it frees up some room. He does like laying down between it and the wall but I can set up some wire shelving for that.
Any tips on how to get them used to each other? I’ve gotten cats and dogs able to get along, but this is my first bunny.

I would try introducing them very slowly and not face to face first and just try getting them used to having each other in the room first

A cage may not be necessary but it's a good idea for a rabbit to have a home base, a space of his own that he can go when he wants to be left alone. It can be quite small if it is always open (or has no door). Maybe that's what you are thinking with the wired shelves you mentioned?

Yes, the space of his own. He only goes into the cage now because that’s where his litter is. He does his business and comes out. He likes to lay down on the outside of the cage by the wall. I’d moved it away from the wall to give him another tunnel type place. Or he goes into one of the cardboard boxes that I turned upside down and have him two openings. The room itself is closed off always. It’s just that the cage takes up so much room and it’s so tall.
