Hello

I was just wondering if it was possible to give a rabbit too much grass? While the weather is bad I’m really struggling to get my indoor bunnies some outside time, so to try and keep them entertained I have been cutting fresh grass from the garden (with scissors not a mower) and giving them a good pile everyday (see pic). I’ve been feeding it under the same rules as hay, they can eat as much as they please and it isn’t a problem, is this correct? Is it also okay if the grass is sometimes wet?

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Grass is hay. Hay is grass.
If rabbits could have 24/7 grass to graze from .... that would be the best.
Not to wet though. I would just worry about how long it sits there inside all damp so as long as its fresh wet grass you should be okay.

You should look into setting up a fodder system and letting them graze from a tray a day then letting that tray re-grow. Then it keeps less bugs from the house potentially.

It doesn't matter much if it's wet - it only spoils a tad faster, if you throw out leftovers daily it is fine. I feed forage most of the year, but when winter comes the quality declines and hay becomes more and more attractive.

Thanks guys, we have 2 pairs of bunnies and all 4 will pretty much sit and eat the grass in one go so I don’t have to worry about it spoiling, there is never anything left. They seem to like it so much it’s what made me question whether it was actually good for them. When I was a teenager we had guinea pigs and our vet commented about them being overweight. At the time I didn’t realise that certain fruit and veg were very high in sugar so was accidentally over feeding so now I’m really paranoid about everything the buns get!

I really like the idea of using a tray system will be much easier than cutting the lawn with scissors every morning. Can’t imagine what the neighbours think!

Lol, get over it, stand to what you're doing :)

Here I'm known as the wierd bunny guy with the scythe and basket, the Not-So-Grim-Reaper, I gather forage everywhere people don't mind. Even got police questioning me when I came out of a field way past nightfall :D. (I'm currently looking for a long, black, robe style raincoat)

Don't underestimate the work that comes with growing fodder. Read up, I'll look if I have a link somewhere :)
