:shameFor shame! The tips are sometimes the *best* part of the work.

Regionally though, I guess there are all kinds of differences. ;)

We don't tip here in Australia either. I think in other countries wages and prices are lowered to allow for tipping.

It's not just me! It's just not customary to tip when you buy a drink at a bar over here. If you go to a pub in the evening with friends, all drinks are ordered at the a bar and paid for then and there, and it's just traditional that either one individual pays, or each person pays for their own drinks. Bartenders over here just aren't really used to accepting tips. To the point where it might be considered out of place or rude to offer a tip. Nobody expects it, therefore nobody gets, or is disappointed.... It's why we struggled at first in San Francisco.... we weren't sure what was expected and what would be considered out of order.....

I tip at restaurants, the pizza guy, hair stylist, car wash, airport baggage guys, groomers. And the guy at a deli, I call and he puts a dish of their special that day so I don't have to worry that it's gone when I get there, there's a college next door and nothing is ever left. So he hooks me up and I tip him everytime.

Since I'm a pet sitter I get tips most of the time from my clients on a weekly basis or just for a vacation job. On a good week I can live on my tips so it does help and is always appreciated.

I don't really tip since I don't really pay for the expensive things.

The ONLY time I tip hairdressers when they do exactly what I want. I will NOT tip them if they rearrange my part, ughh that just drives me insane!

Tonight we went and ate at this expensive place and my dad gave the waitress a 10% tip. I dont know 10% of what, but it was like a $7 tip or something...lol. I mean the waitress was nice and she did deserve it.

I would guess that the bartenders in the UK do a good job, then?
In some bars I've been to, they only do a good job when they're being tipped.
Example, the first drink you get is well-made, but if you don't tip, then the the rest of the drinks you order will be mostly ice/water, and very little else, but costs the same.

I do realize that the average US bartender doesn't make a whole lot, and relies on tips for their real money. But I don't like feeling like I should have to bribe them to do their job!

On the rare occasions I go to a bar anymore I tend to just order a beer in a bottle, from the waitress. A few dollars on the table before I leave, and that's that.
If I do order a drink from the bartender, I'll either tip a dollar a drink, or round up to the nearest dollar. (I can't afford more than a few drinks out, so I can do a dollar a drink.)

It's really the other way around, the tipping makes up for lower wages.
Prices don't really figure into it, since customers are free to decide the amount they want to tip, regardless of the prices. If everyone stopped tipping, wages and prices wouldn't go up.

Thats weird cause where my sister works you start a tab. Pay at the end type thing she holds your id or credit card what ever.

But she is a day bar for a pool hall/bar. She is the only one there during the day and she does make every drink the same. Now she does not make drinks based on if you tip or not she makes it on rudeness. She put cola in a guys beer once cause he walked in for no reason and started causing her out he was drunk ended up in jail he left in cuffs.

She will water down drinks if someone is getting to drunk or if they complain abut it she willjust cut them off. Bar tenders here are required by law tocut someone off if they are getting to drunk.

But I have ran into stupid bar tenders that do everything based on tips. Its dumb in my opppion cause some people tip befor they leave. So if you do something stupid like water crap down or what ever you wont get a good tip.

I would never run a tab at a bar. I have heard too many stories about extra charges being put on the bill. Part of that is people not paying attention to how many drinks they had, or if it's a group, assuming another person had more than you though, etc., and just paying whatever they tell you to. At the bars here, you don't get to see the bill before you pay it, and they just give you a receipt for the total amount. (My husband was once charged for a drink we didn't order on a tab, we were charged for two expensive Scotches when he'd only had one, luckily we caught it before paying.)
So I prefer to pay for each drink as I go.

I am not at all implying that your sister would do this, or that all bars are like this.

I think the bartenders here are supposed to cut you off, too, but I've never seen it done unless someone falls asleep at the bar!

We tip at restaurants and such. Not fast food or takeout, but sit-down places. We normally figure out what 15% is, then figure out how much from there (like if 15% is $4.67 or some weird number, we normally round up to the nearest dollar). If we get "meh" service, which isn't all that great, we tip around 10%. If they really stink, they get a 5% (they have to do something REALLY bad to get that). We never stiff the waiter.

I also tip the people at the hair salon. I normally go to the cheap places, like Great Clips or Fantastic Sam's, so a haircut is like, $12. I usually just pay $15 and leave it at that.

We never tip here lol,I never see anyone tipping anyone, at Christmas we give the post man a bottle of whiskey though :p

Here, when we tip it's 5$ at sit down restaurants per 2 people. When it's delivery it depends, if it's chinese they usually know us so well they fasten up the service. It's usually rounded up to the 10, or if it's close to 10 (like, 7) well round it up to the fifteen.
Confused ? lol.
If it's pizza their terribly slow so it's just rounded to the 5.

When we go to a sitdown restaurant we usually pay 5$ per two people. When we get delivery it depends who we order from. If we order from our favourite chinese place we'll usually round it up to the 10, or if it's close to the 10 (like 7) we'll round it to the 15.

- Like, the total is 37.06 . We'll round it up to 45.-

If we order pizza, my mom's favourite place to order because their sauce and fresh ingredients is really slow so she'll just round it to the 5. If she's feeling generous she'll round it to the 7. ;)

When I get my nails done i'll give the nail technician 5$ and the person who does the airbrush another 5$. I also give them presents for holidays - like Christmas, Easter and so on..- Even if they don't celebrate it I still like to get them a little something for putting up with me for the past year and a half.

When I get my haircut my mom usually pays so she'll give the hairdresser 5$ and the girl who washes my hair another 5$. Since January the hair-washer left so my mom just gives my hairdresser 10$.

________

Last year for my 14th birthday I had 10 friends for dinner at East Side Mario's. We ended up not eating the cake and having a huge cake fight (we were off to the side away from everyone) I was wondering why we didn't get kicked out or stopped when the waitress came and joined in along with a line-cook. My mom (and brothers, S-I-L's and so on were at another table) had given the waitress 200$ extra over the bill to not give us heck or stop it.Also, there was a pretty lovely mess. Not much on the floor but the table tops were smeared with cake.

You must be thinking like OMG and that my mom is nuts but I was in the middle of a depression and got litterally forced to go to the restaurant so she was just happy I was having a good time. Here's some of the nicer pics ;)

The cake... which later got flung http://i40.tinypic.com/fa4ztd.jpg

I do exactly what Kelly does. :D I always round up to the nearest dollar or two after 15% is calculated.

I just got back from Great Clips for a haircut.;) 9 times out of 10, it's the same girl that cuts my hair, so she knows what to do and I am done in 10 minutes. It's $14.00 and I leave a $3.00 tip.

I usually tip 15% at sit down type restaurants. If the service is really good I tip a bit more, if its bad less(10%).

For take out(we pick it up) I dont' tip, unless throwing the spare change into the tip jar counts, lol. If we get delivery we usually tip a few dollars.

At the bar when buying drinks I usually throw in a couple bucks, or the change you get back. It helps with service if the bartender sees you tipping, lol.

I don't usually tip my hair dresser. I'm already paying a fortune to go see her.

We tip the dog groomer though, lol. Usually 5-10$ as she is really nice and my dog can be a pain sometimes.

It seems now people expect you to tip everyone for everything, which I dont' agree with. I also hate when the tip is automatically added to the bill. WTF, I'll decide how much I want to tip thank you very much.

I think the tipping craze is really an "american" thing. My friend just moved to France and is a waitress there. There no one tips and all she gets is her wage(7-8$ or something). When she worked here as a waitress she made min. wage(7-8$) plus tips, which usually equalled 50-100+$ a night.
