I know some people use them exclusively for winter weather (they help keep outside bunnies warm) but I keep a bag of black oil sunflower seeds around for snacks and for helping with Bo's coat. I generally give him 1 or 2 a day for a couple of weeks if he can tolerate them. I'm sure others have done more or less but that's what I do.

Hope it helps!

Hmmm ... I'm very interested in knowing proper amounts as well. I feed sunflower seeds to my goats, and to my pony.

Sunflower seeds are a natural source of selenium, good for putting on weight if need or maintaining weight, and great for a nice shiney, beautiful coat !

My goats get approx 1/4 cup per day, my pony approx 1/2 cup per day, so how much would a bun get ? Like a tsp or Tbs per day ??

I think I need to buy some sunflower seeds.

I am dreading when Dippy and Fluffball starrt shedding.

When do they do it?

J's started already:(:grumpy:

I have a bag of Black Oil Sunflower seeds from, last winter when I was worried about my bunnies being cold. The Sunflower seeds keep em' warm (like oatmeal) and are good for their coats.

Black Oil Sunflower is considered a warm food, because it is fattening which would help keep a bunny warm. The oils from the sunflower seeds conditions the bunnies fur to be soft and shiny. The sunflower seed has nothing to do with shedding fur, unless you feed them too much of it in the warm season, causing them to feel too warm, thus blowing their coat (shed their fur).

gotcha;)

the last thread was in july or aug. and it was some body who was showing, that must be why they were talking about shedding:p

Umm... when you guys say sunflower seeds, are these the ones that you are referring to? (the ones in the blue bowl in the picture below?)

Edit: Sorry about the pic size :( I tried to make it smaller but it doesn't seem to want to listen to me

I feed the solid black sunflower seeds (no white stripes). They are a little smaller and higher in the Sunflower seedoil. And it should be fed in limited amounts. My Mini Rex get 1/4 teaspoon (5-6 seeds) 2-3 times a week during the cold weather.
