It's a bit annoying too when most of the forum spells different from me anyway, all the z's instead of s's, and the u's missing from words where I would normally put them, and the l's and e's around the 'wrong' way. I find a lot of forum spellcheckers only cater for US spelling.

I think people are more concerned about the txt speak and short hand then actual spelling mistakes. Using "u" instead of you, leaving out vowels, lack of punctuation etc. That sort of stuff makes posts hard to read.
Exactly. I can breeze by typos and regional spelling (US vs. UK, Australian, NZ) no problem.

OK maybe I should have put "Text Speak" in the title(I didn't even know that's what it was called, an age thing again), that's what drives me nuts the most. I can't figureout what people are trying to say.

I'm like you Beth I type out the whole word when I text.

I agree with this, as well. I don't have problems with the UK spellings or most typos. When everything is squished into one sentence that has no "real" words in it is where I get confused. "OMG teh BBQ wuz AWSUM!" is a terrible disgrace to the English language. There are English classes in schools for a reason! ;)

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Since we're airing our pet peeves on typing, mine is being so lazy that you can't hold the shift down to capitalize the first letter of your sentences or the letter "I" when referring to oneself. The reason to capitalize that first letter of your sentence is that it helps to determine where the next sentence is beginning, so they don't all run together. It makes it really difficult to read when the sentences just seem to swarm together across the screen.

My mother was anEnglish teacher. I taughtEnglish for years. I teach it now in elementary school. It's very difficult to read some posts without grimacing or itching to correct. LOL

One of the biggest compliments I was ever given as a teacher was while I was on hall duty. The students were walking past me in the hallway and one student said something in poor grammar to me. The student next to her, who was in my class, pulled her armimmediately and said, "No! You can't talk to Mrs. Bachelor that way! You have to say it like this!"She then told her friend how to say the same sentencein proper English. I don't even remember what the sentence was, but the compliment about my expectations was awesome!

Oh! I forgot to mention this, too! Sentences in all upper-case letters are annoying. PLEASE DON'T TYPE YOUR ENTIRE POST LIKE THIS! :grumpy:

I agree, typing like that is so annoying and it seems like you're yelling.

Also, don't type this like: tHiS iS jUsT sO aNnOyInG aNd HaRd To ReAd. :grumpy:people who do this thing they're..."All that..." And "gangster"....please don't.

I've noticed that my spelling gets awful late at night. That's mainly due to the oversensitive key board of the lap top and David insisting to have a small light on. I often can't see a thing. I'll try to improve in future and just found the spell check:)

But, when someone's consistently using text-speak, I can't read their posts. I'm sure they probably have legitimate things to say, but I get a headache trying to figure it out. Often I will stop reading a whole thread if someone is doing text-speak.
Maybe it's my "old age;" my best friend and I even type out most words when we're texting each other. Sure, something might be broken into 3 transmitted messages, but that's OK with us!

I actually find text speak even in texts somewhat outdated since there is "predictive text input" and the amounts you can squeeze into one text message are much longer than they used to. I'm convinced I'm faster typing proper words than using abbreviations
