Sneezing his head off!

Ok first of all let me start by saying that Nummy has dental issues. In January he had some teeth reemoved along with a tooth that was growing into his sinuses. He was sneezing like crazy before he had the removal and he is sneezing all the time now. Sometimes he even sneezes up some mucusat times when it is really bad. (He has been testedfor infections and is negative)I feel sorry for Nummy since it does seem to bother him a bit. I guess what I want to know is if I can give Nummy some antihistamine or something to calm his nasel membranes (if they are inflamed). Nummy does have a appointment with the vet next week for his regular check up. I guess I just hope I can give Nummy some relief. I am wondering if anyone has ever given their bun some kind of relief from sneezing fits, and if so does it work? Also does anyone know if after the teeth have broken through the bone will the bone close up and heal, or is it permanent damage now? I know I should be asking a vet which I will next week, but I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and if so what treatment are used for relief. Any advise is good advice .

Antihistimines in rabbits are controversial. I have never used them. You are many times much better of increasing the humidity in the environment. The jaw will heal assuming that no infecton is involved.

Something to remember....and even some vets forget this one.....Pasteurella Multocida, the most common pathogen found in rabbits, is a faculative anaerobic....which means certain strains can live with or without oxygen. And that means that is isn't always grown in a petri dish. So if we have clinical signs of an infection with no dish growth, we treat for Pasteurella. My suggestion....ask your vet about running a treatment of at least 14 dose on rabbit dosing of Zithromax.

There aren't a lot of things you can do; it's possible to give antihistamines but I'd want to call the vet to get the correct dose and which particular one they think would be good. He might be able to tell you something like "go buy benadryl for kids and give 3 drops" or whatever. You can make sure his nasal membranes are hydrated by using a humidifier and/or putting him in the bathroom while you run a hot shower.

I don't know the answer to the bone questions, sorry. I do know that bones do continue to grow throughout life, but I'm not sure what happens when a tooth root goes through a bone. I got the impression that they can put a lot of pressure on the bone, but I don't know if they actually will puncture the bone to go through. Usually some infection around the root of the tooth occurs, and that infection spreads to the bone and can break it down. That kind of damage is probably not possible to heal...

Hmmm I hope it isn't some infection.ray: Nummy has been treated for the sneezing a few times before we knew what it was caused by. When the vet did his teeth removal he said there was no infection that he detected. When I smell his mouth he smells like a rabbit and not smelly in a bad way. I think the vet said that the bone looked good too. He did break a tooth though, but I haven't noticed any infection type smell off of the little guy, I smelled it once with my dog when she broke a tooth bad. He will be back to the vets though to get a check-up so I will makesure they check. At the moment his vet is in Toronto at the Links Road Animal Clinic. They are specialists in exotics and small animals. They told me they see more rodents, birds and reptiles more than they do dogs and cats. I feel pretty confident that they will find the problem if there is one. I just hope Nummy isn't suffering or anything being like this. He seems highly annoyed at times and I can't help him out!:?I sometimes find that dabbing his nose with a kleenex after helps a bit. I wish there was more I could do.

Hmm ok, sounds about right. I'm not sure exactly what's going on because I haven't seen x-rays of tooth roots punching through into the sinus cavity but maybe I need to look at our head x-ray pics again.

You can use one of those plastic bulbs that people use to clean babies' noses, and I have heard of using Vicks in the vaporizer too, but I don't have one of those and I personally kinda react badly to Vicks when it's on my skin so I would be hesitant to use it on him. You could use one of those tub Vicks things--it goes in the shower on the floor while you run the water and releases into the air that way, supposedly. I just had a really bad cold so I spent a lot of time in the cold remedies aisle!

randy says it all,,right here,,there could be a partial blockage of either nasal duct,,even if the eye teeth have been removed.//.antihistimines/oral-are illadvised.//.and if the decision is antibiotics,,again offer probiotics-(i personally like the oxbow critical care)-help,,-beef up the immune system and gitract.//.i recently found out cultures don,t necessarily tell the whole story,,could need a blood test,-if all else fails.//.like randy says-zithromax-kill the bacteria where it stands...sincerely james waller:scared::biggrin:

From looking at a few x-rays, I would not expect the bones around the sinus to grow back after tooth roots grew through them.

I forgot to mention that I did get blood work done on Nummy when he went in to get his teeth removal, his results were clean . I hope he has not developed a infection since then.

I will have to look at what vicks has...the shower thing sounds interesting. He sneezed a bit less today, I have a appointment for him on May 3rd. His vet is on vacation right now and I like Nummy just to stick to the same vet if we can. I will ask the vet about the zithromax, if there is any bacteria I want it gone! I will be off to the drug store tomorrow to see what I can find for Nummy.

Maybe I should look into a humidifyer for the little guy.:nod
