hi can someone advise me? my mini lop gave birth last thursday and 1 of the babies seems smaller than the rest:(it seems quite haooy wriggling and stuff and appears to be ok. is there something i should do as this is my first ever set of kits and i dont want to lose any, i would be devasted.:bigtears:pleas help me

It could be a peanut. They occur when the baby gets two copies of the dwarfing gene and are unavoidable. They also do not survive.

It could also just be a runt. Does it look different from the other babies? Do its feet look different? A runt will look like the others, but smaller, while a peanut will look different (I'll leave it up to the breeders to describe a peanut).

Its probably just a runt :) as long as its happy and has a plump tummy I wouldnt worry usually my nethie runts catch up when they are eating solids :)

You'd probably have noticed by now if it's a peanut, so I'm thinking it's a runt.

However, if you're going to breed any more, you have to realize losing kits, and even does, is quite common. Especially in smaller breeds. In the last month, I've had three litters. 7, 6, and 2. Out of 15 babies, I lost 5.

Just putting that out there.

I had a litter of six lionheads and the one was very small so i feed him kitten milk replacer once a day for about 3 days. It gave him a pump and by 2 weeks he was the same size.

just a quick reply. the smallest one looks exactly the same as rest . it seems to be wriggling and everyting else the others are doing.:) will keep checking daily though. it seems ok so maybe it is a runt. thanks for all your help guys:D

Also...I think that only the smaller breeds even get peanuts... lol So like woolies, netherlands, some mini rex. Those carry the dwarf gene.

This is a mini lop....They are pretty large. Not dwarf at all. XD

So this baby should be a runt. ;) Often the runt will die within the first week or two of life, but you can try to give him the milk replacer and see if that helps. That way it wont have to compete for milk.

thanks for the link. and after looking at it and inspecting my kits i am sure its not a peanut but just a runt . it seems to be catching up in size as i keep puting it to the top so hopefully it will be ok:). it doesnt lay on its side but is hard to keep still just like the rest when i check them over so please god it will be ok. theyre a week old today !!!! yay!!!!
