Hey guys, Im new to Rabbitsonline but I'm so glad I found you, it is so nice to see a bunch of fellow rabbit lovers, I thought I was just crazy!

Anyway I have a new bunny who was half wild but super tame, I would have left him alone butI noticed he was limping so I caught him. Ok now the reason why he is limping is because it looks like he has 2 puncture wounds on his testicle. I have cleaned it and put antiseptic on an given antibiotics. I looked at it today and saw that it actually looks a lot better BUT, he has 2 huge black worm things in each hole! He lives in a large clean outdoor pen with plenty of goodies to eat, so its not like he's in some small pen where infection can grow quickly. He eats, drinks, and plays(he's not a great snuggler but we're working on it) andhe doesn't look like he's in pain, and there is only a slight limp. I would like to not have to take him to the vet cus' they'll only take them out and give antibiotics or just remove the testicle.But I will if I have2.Any suggestions or comments would be awesome.

Those are most likely the larvae of the Cuterebra...a large hairy fly. They are also known by such terms as Bots, Warbles, Wolves and others. They should be removed as they can cause some infection issues. It is crucial that the larvae be removed by a skilled vet. If the larvae's body is compromised inside your rabbit, it can lead to anaphylatic shock. What you are seeing is the breathing function of the worm....basically a gill.

Ihad a rabbit (from the shelter) with a bot fly larvae in a testicle. Be sure to have a skilled vet remove this as if it breaks while you are trying to do it it will most likely kill the rabbit.
Also you can not wait on this as when the larvae is fully developed it will leave the rabbit ( as a fly) often causing a lot of damage .


Bot fly larvaes in animal are really unpleasant
imagine how the poor rabbit feels. !

hi,emm..i agree with randy,,but unless you are well aquainted with antibiotcs for rabbits,,dosages,etc..with the damage done-fly larvae-insides.??--i would get him to an exotic dvm a.s.a.p---sincerely james waller

Whew this has been an absolute adventure!Budd is totally recovered! When I saw that he had the morms in his testicle I was pretty grossed out, but then I imagined how my poor bunny felt and then I new exactly what I had to do. I called my vet freind and asked her what to do and she said to pull them out and keep the area clean. So I pulled them out(hands down one of the most awful thigs I have ever had to do) but surprisingly they kinda came right out no tugging or anything like that. put some hydrogen peroxide and some polysporin and put him in a clean house inside. I cleaned his house out almost every hour so it would stay super clean and cleaned the wounds twice a day and gave him a natural antibiotic which is garlic, twice a day. Budd is completly recovered! He's back outside now the testicle is almost completly healed and is doing fine, whew so thankful. Thanks everyone for all the feedback and ideas!

Getting ready for my Beatrixs first litter so excited( by the way Budd is the father so evidently those worms had nothing to do with his parenting skils:biggrin2:

I am a veterinary techician and it definatly sounds like a Cuterebra...I would take him to the vet to not only take care of it but to also have him neutered.

Oh, just the thought of warbles makes me ill. I've removed more then my fair share. The vet I work for is located in the country, so we see them a lot. I'm glad you were able to get your vet friend to remove them. I've found that a lot of old time farmers can remove them better then anyone else. My sister-in-law's father is expert at it. LOL
