I have not been at the shelter since last Sat.. I was supposed to show a rabbit today to a woman who canceled at the last minuteso I didn't go in..I also did not check my e-mail until later inday.

I learned later todaythat a tiny 6 yr old male dutch has been having diarrhea for 2 days.

he was fine on Sat as I noted how clean he was for an un-neutered boy and also that his poops were very normal and solid.
I WAS NOT ABLE to go see him today and I amvery upset.

I told Cassandra that he should see a vet, also to remove all food except hay and a small amount of pellets.

I do not know if anyone in the shelter has been giving him a lot of carrots etc. They are not rabbit -saavy. I also do not know if he is dehydrated or not but will assume he probably is.

no one there can syringe feed so I will do this tomorrow after he goes to the vet and most likely I will take him home with me.
right now I need some suggestions on what I can give him to get him past this..

this is what I am thinking. !) plain water or pedialyte 2) probiotics like benebac 3) oatmeal 4) hay ..what else can I do

he may be dead by morming for all I know and I curse myself for not going in early.

2-3 ccs of Pepto Bismol 2-3 times a day will help to harden the stool. It works well.

Also, get a fecal run for coccidiosis or other intestinal parasites if it's possible.

Or skip the fecal and just give a bunch of Albon. Brilliant stuff. 1 cc of the liquid stuff two-three times a day.

Albon is for coccidiosis. I mix it with their water, 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water, and give for 5 days, stop for 3 and if necessary, repeat for 5.

If the rabbit had diarrhea from cocidiosis, there is a distinctive nasty smell. For any diarrhea, I would take away all pellets for 2-3 days and just give fresh clean hay and unlimited water. No fresh fruit or vege's at all...

One cc, how many times a day depending on the dosage of Albon. If it's the 125 mg stuff (the dosage they usually give for rabbits, although sometimes they'll give a little higher), a cc twice a day if the diarrhea is bad, or half a CC every twelve hours if it isn't bad.

Really, even if it isn't coccidiosis, you can give them Albon to help purge the gut out. Albon is a nifty drug- it gets rid of the bad stuff and keeps the good stuff. The Pepto will help to harden the stools.

Personally, I find it easier to get the 125 mg pills, crush them, and mix them with 1/2 a tablespoon of light Karo syrup. All the rabbits I've treated love the stuff. If you get the 125 mg pills, break it in half and give half twice a day if the diarrhea isn't bad, but give a full pill twice a day if it is.

The ideal thing to do would be to get a fecal for coccidiosis or other parasites.

Well I'm home and the bunny is fine.

Yesterday they just put him on straight hay.

I had a lot of stuff I brought to the shelter like pepto bismol, oatmeal, pedialyte and feeding syringes and here he is just fine as can be in his cage having normal poops.
I even planned on taking him home with me.

Anyway thank you for so much, Ivory and Blue. I didn't know most of this and I will keep it for a refererence I went through all that worry but at least I learned something.

Happy to hear everything is coming out alright! He's probably been through a lot of stress... poor baby!:inlove:
