Shedding

I believe I've read numerous times that rabbits shed about 4 times per year. Dopey is a 6lbs Mini Lop and he started shedding about one month after I brought him home.. and it hasn't stopped since. There is fur EVERYWHERE. We can never pet him without having fur stick to our hands afterwards, whether it be a 3 second pet or a "massage" that lasts a few minutes.

Is this normal and if not, whatcould be the underlying problem?

How long has he been shedding now?

It can be related to diet - What pelletsdo you give him?He should be on a good quality Timothy based pellet if possible - with no little treats in it. Sometimes feeding alfalfa pellets is too much protein and can cause continuous molting.

I also found that frequentfluctuations in temperature causes constant shedding - like if the room they are in is very hot in the dayand then very cool at night, it can keep them in a constant molt.

And last - some rabbits just shed more and longer than others. Some buns just blow their coat in a couple days,others take a couple months.

I have the same problem with Zeke. I've had him for a little over a year, and it doesn't seem like there has been a day when he hasn't shed like crazy!Everytime I pet him, his fur goes flying everywhere... up into my eyes,my nose, etc.! I brush him constantly and he does have a good diet. I feed him Timothy pellets, hay, and fresh veggies. I'll admit... I do give him about a teaspoon of treats every day, though (yogurt drops or dried fruit). He doesn't have a cage and gets ton of exercise...

It's so annoying to constantly clean up all the hair! I wish there were a solution.

I would say he's been shedding for around 4 months now. Some days there's very little and others, the amount is unbelievable. Even though he's been shedding constantly, there are no bald spots/patches.

He is on timothy pellets that I get from a feed store. He free roams in my kitchen and the temperature is pretty consistent in there.I know some sheds take a couple of months, but this just seems so abnormal to me -- my other rabbit doesn't shed nearly as often as he does.

My rabbits only shed once a year and it usually takes a week or two.Exsessive shedding may be caused by overweight too much protein or skin problems.my experience has been most pet rabbits shed too much because they are overweight.bluebird
