Yesterday morning, Sammy seemed fine. Last night, when I went out to do my evening check, he was so lifeless it seemed like he could hardly hold himself upright. I had him to the vet this morning, and Dr. Drake gave him sub-q fluids and a Baytril injection. He said Sammy has a temp of 103.6, and his lungs sound loud. His stomach felt nice and soft, he said, so it shouldn't be gas or stasis causing this. I have more Baytril to give him twice a day, and if he isn't more lively by tomorow morning Dr. Drake wants to see him back.

Sammy is so droopy that he won't touch any food, not even treats. His breathing is very fast, and even though he normally does not like being picked up, when I turn him upside down he is just limp. He didn't even so much as twitch when the vet took his temp or gave him the shots. I have been trying to get Pedilyte down him, but it all just dribbles back out of his mouth, he won't swallow it. WHAT DO I DO?!!

He had some at the vet's this morning. If he isn't doing better by tomorow morning he is going back in.

Do you know if he ate yesterday? Or when the last time he pooped was? Is he pooping now?

Also, any discharge from his nose? Any wheezing?

The only time Ive seen extreme lethargy was in gas attacks. Youre sure he isnt having stomach troubles? Did the vet listen to his gut? His heart?

He ate fine yesterday. His nose is a little damp. He has also been drooling, but this has started so abruptly I can't imagine it would be tooth-related. The vet listened to his lungs, I honestly don't know if he listened to his heart or not, he didn't mention it. I gave Sammy simethicone yesterday evening and once during the night, it didn't seem to make any difference at all. He has passed a couple of cecals, and a small amount of pee, but not a whole lot else. Vet said his tummy felt soft, though.

Could this be heart related? Would it have hit this suddenly? Sammy is Ben's son, and I know Ben's heart was enlarged.

Did he sound congested? Did you check the Library file? Heart Problems

The temperature isn't that high I don't think. Normal range goes to 102? I'm not sure that it would be pneumonia, although that could be part of it.

A heart problem is more likely, pneumonia could be a side effect. It would count for a shortness of breath and lethargy.

Oxygen, low stress environment, antibiotics, diuretics and various human heart meds seem to be the usual course of treatment to control the problem.

So sorry. :(

Sure this isn't a heat issue? Make sure he has a lot of air flow. (If you live in an area where you can find little mini oxygen tanks or tubes, I'd go for that).

First.....look at his gums and tongue to see what color they are. They should be bright pink. That color will lead us to different directions in trying to isolate a potential cause of this concern.

I just got back from an emergency trip to the vet with Sammy. About 5:00 I was checking on Sammy again and was going to try getting some pineapple juice down him. When I picked him up, he was limp and unresponsive and was breathing shallowly with his mouth hanging open.

While I was typing my update on Sammy, Dr. Drake called. He said that despite the oxygen and their best efforts to revive him, Sammy went into respiratory distress and passed away.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I edited the title of the thread to share that you lost him - I hope you don't mind.

I wish I could be of more help.....
