Hi bunny parents!

The local humane society recently got a mini rex buck. I forget his age but it's <5 years. He showed up and they gave him the cursory lung and heart checks but I'm pretty sure he has some skin problems, which might even explain why he was given up. The reason he was given up was the owner developed allergies.

The first skin problem is on his hind legs where I suspect the fur rubbed off after too much time on a wire cage.

The second skin problem looks like it's caused by dry patches of skin on his back. It's causing the fur to thin and feel rough and dandruff.

I really doubt the humane society will help him with these problems, so I'm wondering what I might be able to do. If anyone has ideas about what salves or whatever I should try please reply.

Thanks,
Jeff

The fur loss on the back is most likely fur mites which can be treated with Ivermectin.

The fur loss on the legs (feet?) may be sore hocks. Applying non-staining iodine may help to clear that up.

Photos can help us evaluate the problem a little better.

one of my rexes - roxy has suffered from sore hocks, (the rex doesnt have very thick guard hairs on their hocks:() thanks to her concrete fetish - she loves chilling out on it despite the bunny barrier designed to keep her off:rollseyes whilst she was on enforced recovery - locked in the bunnery - to give them time to heal - i lined her quarters with fleece. a recommendation from another forum member as being kinder on the hocks. ive also stopped using woodflakes as these can sometimes irritate.

i hopeyou are able tohelp this little bunny, sounds like he could use a friend:pray:

My mistake: I just remembered she's a girl. It'd help if I remembered her name. I'll ask and see what they can do for her or what I can do.

And indeed, she needs a friend. When I was there with her she just wanted to snuggle the whole time. It made me sad for her.:cry1:

They do have a buck, Riley, but I don't know his breed. He's a nice enough fellow but sadly they won't neuter him until someone's already decided to adopt him. It seems backwards to me. I feel like having a talk with one of their administrators to see if they'd change their neuter/spay policy for rabbits.

Why have I not heard that before? I need to try that with Bo. His aren't horrible but he always has some tender hocks....

And Mini-Rex generally LOVE to snuggle in my experiences! and you can snort their fur! :biggrin2:

It's an old timer's remedy to treat sore hocks due to fugal infections. I originally heard it years ago from a British judge. Some people swear by it, so I though I'd throw it out there. ;)

I agree with Pam. Sounds to me like mites on her back. Invermectin works well. I use Revolution (the kitten dose) which they should have on hand.

Sore hocks are very common in rexes. Another suggestion is putting something like bag balm (for cows, sold at most walmarts and though in the pet section)or desitin if its not an open wound. If it is an open sore they should use something like silvadine or neosporin (the kind without pain reliever).

Is she at Capital Humane Society? I thought they were usually pretty good about taking care of bunnies. Im sorry to hear she's not getting the care she needs :(

Yup, she's at Capital Humane Society. I'll see the little gal within the next few days and see if she's any better.

I almost remembered her name just now... polkadots? spot? Patches! That's it.

I like Udder Creme for sore hocks. Glad you're getting her!

I went back yesterday and she'd been adopted! I was sad because I wanted to see her, but hopefully her new human(s) know how to treat her right.
