I was wondering if any of you had a good beefstew recipe that you'd like to share. It's that time of year where Ilike to make those hearty meals, especially in a crock pot. I have agood recipe I've been using for years, but would like to try somethingdifferent.

Just made the BEST chicken noodle soup yesterday, from scratch.Mmmmmmm. Having it again tonight. Made a ton, but it freezes well.

Basically what I do is toss the beef chunks in amixture of flour, salt & pepper. Brown them in some olive oil.In the same pan, I saute some onions, then toss them in with the beef.

Usually I'll throw in some potatoes, carrots, a packet of beefy LiptonOnion Soup Mix, some beef boullion cubes, and simmer all day in thecrock pot. If I happen to have a bottle of red wine, I'll put about a1/4 cup in. Also, if I have mushrooms on hand, those go in the pot aswell.

It's very yummy, and sitting there all day, on a cool fall dayespecially, with beef stew simmering in the crock pot. Well, it's justgood.

Oh yeah, I usually make scratch bisquits too. As you can see, I love to cook. :D

My beef stew recipe is from my mother. When Iwas little I was a very picky eater (still am), but I lovedmom's beef stew. My mom would freeze the gravy from the stew in icecube trays and melt it on whatever I was to eat & it workedlike a charm. So here's our stew recipe:

Brown 1lb stew beef in a little oil in a pan then drain the fat

Put beef in a large pot add whatever veggies you like in stew. I do potatos, carrots & a bit of celery.

Put in an 8oz can of tomato sauce & enough water to cover beef & veggies.

1Tbl Worchestershire sauce, 1Tbl A1 steak sauce, 1Tbl soy sauce

Cook for hours, then add flour & water to thicken after addingflour & water, bring to a boil & stir to get rid oflumps and flour taste. (that might be obvious, but it wasn't to me thefirst time I made it)

And of course, add more or less of everything depending on how much you make.

Enjoy

That's a really good idea, to freeze the leftovergravy. I will have to do that. There are times when I wished I had abit of gravy, and those packets make way too much for one serving.

That recipe sounds good too. I'll have to give it a shot. Thanks!

I Love Beef Stew! I'll take a look atmy cookbooks and see if any one in particular stands out. Imeant to do that last night for you, Stephanie, but it slipped mymind. My cousinused tomake great beefstew. The gravy was really thick. Sheuseda lot of flour, and someGravy Master, atonof garlic, and the pieces of vegetables and beef were nice andhearty.

Now you've got me craving it!

Stephanie,

I can't make it this weekend because I'm booked up, but I know it'sgoing to be something I'll be doing in the near future. Youprepare it in the crockpot? I love my crockpot. It's so great to go home to a wonderfully smelling house and a mealthat's ready to eat. I use it all the time during the falland winter.

Yes, I love my crock pot. Had to keep my originalone in VT, so right before we moved from Toronto to Ottawa, I went toWalmart to get a new one. It's a staple item in my kitchen, especiallythis time of year into winter.

There is nothing quite like a slow simmer of yumminess all day long.

Well Stephanie,

I have all the ingredients for stew and will make it tomorrow in mycrockpot. I'm going to take suggestions from all of the abovenotes.

Thanks Stephanie and Sarah for the idea.

Hi Stephanie,

Well, have the beef browned in my cast iron pan, and I'm getting readyso that all I have to do is throw it all in the crock pot tomorrowmorning before work.

I love good 'ol Betty Crocker and she has a couple of Beef Stew recipesin her Crockery Cookbook. She mentions 2.5 cups of vegetablejuice. On her 'Hearty Beef Stew Recipe', she calls for one 10 oz. canof cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup and 1/2 cup of dry redwine or beef broth. All that of course is in addtion to your onion soupmix, and what you're doing now.

In my Fix-It and Forget It Cookbook, they have a ton of BeefStew recipes submitted by people across the USA. Some things that theyhave out there mentioned are that aren't stated in the prior notes fromAnneS and Sarah's Mom's excellent recipe are as follows. I don'tsuggest you use all of this, of course, but take what you like andleave the rest. It's just to give you ideas. :) Paprika (usually abouta tsp.), 1 pkg. of taco seasoning mix or any gravy mix, 1.5 Tbsp.cornstarch, 1 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1/2 tsp. ground cloves, 1/3-1/2 cupquick-cooking tapioca, Italian seasoning, stewed tomatoes, 1/2 cupsilvered almonds, bay leaf.

I'm going to take some of those ideas and combine them with Sarah'sMom's recipe and yours and I'm sure it's going to be de-lish! I've gota flower of garlic that I'll put 1/2 of in there, at least, and somejalapenos.

I plan on going out tomorrow to get theingredients to make it later on this week. It's like, now I HAVE tomake it. The seed has been planted, you know?

I am going to take all of these ideas here, with Sarah's mom's recipe and your suggestions. Going to be goooooooood. :)

Now I want some beefstew =)

Maybe I will make some tomorrow so when I get home from work at 8 I canjust cuddle up with a nice big bowl of the stuff. Maybe anice crusty bread from Panera too =)

Yumyum!

And I LOVE my crockpot too =) Not only do I use it for soups and stews, but potroast, and pork roast too =) my Fiancee LOVES myporkroast, probably because I imbed lots of garlic in it hehe

My mouth is watering listening to you girls!

After Raspberry Swirl's incident with Sebastian last night and eatingthe flip-flop, I actually was so wired that I cut up all thevegetables, and decided, what the heck--I'll put it all together andput it on low. Did that.

BOY, did it look pretty when I stirred it this morning. Itsmelled so good. I put a bit too much jalapenos in so I'llhave to add some more vegetables to soak up the heat, but I like a kickto it.

bunsforlife, I'm a fanatic about garlic. Tucker loves ittoo. I have a great cookbook called The Garlic Lover'sCookbook. Various people send their recipes in from theGilroy Garlic Festival each year. Haven't had a badmeal from that cookbook yet.

-Carolyn
