Okay, so over the past few months, Bunner's eye has been oozing a whitish discharge. The vet told us it was nothing to worry about at first, but now it's oozing so much, a circle of fur at least an inch around his eye is soakes ): THe same is is now closed more often. what could be causing this? Both his eyes have cateracts, and the oozy one seems a bit swollen. I'm thinking but hoping it's not the case; that the chin abscess maybe spread behind his eye.

My mum is against vet visits saying he's too old at this point.

Well....I hope you can convince your mom to reconsider. She will be old and leaky one day...will she decline medical care because she gets old? I hope not. She would probably be appreciative of any help you could give her....the rabbit deserves the same. In today's world, there is no need for suffering.

And any vet that tells you a white discharge isn't something to address might need to find a new line of work....and if it's treating animals, it should be stuffed animals. And you may tell him/her I said that. My patience with incompetent vets gave out a long time ago.

But seriously about the problem....it sounds like some type of irritation and/or infection. The eye is tearing in an effort to relived the discomfort. Just the same as when you get something in your eye. It could be an infection....eye, upper respiratory or even dental. It could be an abrasion or ulcer....and those require medical intervention. And it could be irritation from the cataracts. In many cases in something like that, a lubricant like Refresh Gel might help. But it sounds uncomfortable and I hope you can convince your mother to reconsider her position and get some competent veterinary help for your rabbit.

I've been checking his eye and there's nothing obviously stuck in it. that rules out one cause at least. i think i'll try to convince her to take him in because we also need to get him some medication. let's just hope it's something minor

The injected penicillin and oral antibiotic regime will help with this as well.

It could also be a blocked tear duct. My rabbit Sean had a weepy eye and the vet flushed the duct and some gunk came out. The cause of a blocked duct could be tooth problems or an infection.
He could just be dealing with old rabbit problems.

If you can, offer to pay for the vet visit yourself. You might be able to work out a payment plan with your mom or even the vet (some do, some don't). It really won't et better if you don't do anything about it.

A vet can also flush the tear duct in order to rule that possibility out.
