I work at a petstore, and sadly we do sell rabbits. However, I always spend a good hour telling people about how to take care of a rabbit and getting a feel for the persons situation, to make sure that the rabbit is going to a good home. I often tell people that I won't sell them a rabbit. Anywho...

A lady came into our store today talking about buying a guinea pig from us and started going on my little spiel about small animals when she tells me that she bought a rabbit from us months ago (before i started working there) but killed it in the first month because it was to hard to take care of.. and then expects me to sell her another animal!! I just about told her to leave the store and never come back.. but instead I told her that maybe a goldfish would be better.

I just hate how people can see rabbits as unimportant and just pets for their 5 year old children. Rabbits are much more than that, they are a part of the family and deserve so much more respect than they get, I wish people could see how great of a companion they are :/

Sorry for the rant, that lady just made me so mad! I get sick and tired of people coming into my store and telling me how they treat their rabbits (One lady bought a rabbit for her 5 yo daughter and then let it go two days later because the rabbit ran away from her, and then wanted to buy a hamster from me..grr)

When I worked at Petsmart as I tell in my blog, most of my rescues came while I worked at a Pet store. I was also written up numerous time for denying customers pets. What can you do.

People are absolutely disgusting. That's terrible. :(

One other thing I want to point out, though, is that goldfish aren't a beginner pet at all, and suggesting them as a low-maintenance pet isn't a good idea. Just FYI. :) Fishkeeping is one of my hobbies, and I'm full of info if you'd like it.

:yeahthat:

Also, When I worked at Petsmart as an employee we had the right to refuse to sell any animal or fish to a customer.

Um if you couldn't deal with a rabbit for more then a month what makes you think you're going to be any different with a guinea pig.

Exactly what I would have said to that lady!

i worked at a pet store for 2 years and i was thankful that my senority and position gave me the ability to deny sales. i denied a sale on a fish once (14" oscar for a 30g tank which is TINY) and he went all the way to the owner. The owner called the store and talked to me, and i told him if he wanted to fire me for thinking about what was best for the animal then he needed to rethink the business he was running. after that i denied many sales-and rabbits didnt move very much but i denied a lot of those too.

even though some people may think its bad to work at a petstore, i held a lot of pride in knowing that i COULD educate these people.

sorry that was long lol

but some people will never realize that an animal is more than that. its not something for our entertainment or to say o i have this and that...

It's sad to hear something like that :( Pets need alot of the things we humans need.

A couple of months ago, me and my Dad were going to my nannys house (she lives on the same road as me) and I was carrying Jenni(my mix bun). There was a woman, about 27, who stopped me because she noticed the rabbit. She asked, "Is that a rabbit?" and I said "yeah" and smiled, about to carry on walking. She said "I was thinking of getting one for my little girl, she is 4 1/2 . Are they good pets?" I replied "If you do your re-search and give them all their needs they are, but I wouldn't recommend getting one for a four year old as a pet".
She said back to me "Ah sure, you just feed them twice a day, make sure they dont run out of water and they'll be grand. I have a back garden so it could live there". Well, I never heard anything so stupid in my life! So anyway I explained to her that they need a cage or a hutch, need love and attention, you need to have spare money for vet bills & all the rest of it..

Though I must admit, when my brother 1st got his rabbit he knew nothing but he was sure to ask the pet store and he bought a book from there. He also bought a book which had just about everything about rabbits from the book shop next door.

The people that really frost my butt are the ones that stop at our adoption events and make jokes about eating rabbits. Yeah, real funny. We do have to be polite, much to my dismay.

I get enough of that when I tell people that I have house rabbits. The response is something like, "We had rabbits when I was little, but we used to eat them." I understand that some families use(d) rabbits as a meat source during tough times, but I wish they would respect my desire to have them as cherished pets.

It really gets tough to be nice when they ask you for recipes.

I get the jokes about eating my rabbits too, even my parents do it. I just laugh it off.

I think that's the point when they have to be told firmly (and politely) that they are at the wrong event and maybe they should visit a lifestock show:(

There was a woman who came into my store who said she had an English lop and we started talking about bunnies (she was very knowledgeable and sounded like a great bun mommy) and she told me a story from her childhood. She said that she had a HUGE flemie when she was younger and that it was the best behaved rabbit she has ever owned, but her next door neighbor always made jokes about eating the rabbit, because it was so big, but she always brushed it off until one night the rabbit went missing while they were out and come to find out the neighbor had actually cooked her pet rabbit.

I dont know if i could control myself if someone actually ate my rabbit, i would probably end up in jail :/

That is another good reason to keep your pet rabbits in the house

Ditto.
o.o

When I fist got my bun Pippin, I was in Catholic school at the time, roughly 7th grade.
And the Priest found out and started asking me when I would eat him.
The horrid thing is he was not kidding.
:grumpy:

People can be so inconsiderate, it makes me sick. I'm sure it would be taboo for those people to talk about eating a Cat or Dog around their devoted owner. They would probably never even consider letting such words pass their lips because they have always been viewed as strictly companion animals.

There is quote that can be seen in the video "In Hope: An Animal Shelter Story" that reads, "Animal ownership has traditionally been held as a right. It needs to be a revocable privilege." Which I totally agree with. I wish pet stores would stop selling animals all together, but applaud employee's that care enough to be the voice of the innocent.

My grandmother grew up on a farm in Finland, they had Rabbit's as pets which I found very surprising. I thought for sure she was going to say they used them for food. She spoke of how everyday they would collect fresh grass for them. While I'm positive they did not live long, it was nice that she could understand my crazy bunny obsession on some level.

:D

I would like to clarify that I realize that there are some people that raise rabbits for food, and it is not this issue that is my problem. It is the people that are insensitive enough to walk by my rabbits and comment on how tasty Puffin looks for dinner.
Well, you can always let them know that you are rather partial to dog roast for tea:(

Oh my gosh!! She killed it because it was too hard to take care of?? And yet she expects a rabbit to be easier to take care of?

My gosh, I'm glad you didn't sell her the rabbit... I don't think she deserves an animal if she killed that guinea pig! That's animal cruelty.

My mom and her boyfriend always joke about my rabbits for dinner too - mainly it's my mom's boyfriend. I just glare at him and give him disgusted looks. It really makes me angry that they would think that. They used to do it too when I had chickens and ducks. Ugh... I mean I'm not against it, but when it's about my pets? Yea, that tends to make me angry.
