I'm glad the training thread is active again!!
Emily, besides letting him run around and get comfortable, I would get a "training blanket". Just some kind of pad or blanket that you can lay down on the floor and train him on every time. He might be nervous about new surroundings, but he'll remember the blanket and be more focused. I've thought about using this for my own bun, so that he'll actually remember his tricks and focus when we go other places, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
I got a new bunny a few weeks ago, but have yet to train her to do anything! I'm a bad mommy. But I think she needs to get more comfortable. She really only comes out to the living room to race around, but she's not comfortable laying down and relaxing here yet and will usually go back to her cage for that. No reason I can't start in her cage though! She seems far smarter than Otto (sorry, Otto-man!) and I think she'll catch on. She is very focused on people and the signals we're sending her but is also relatively fearless, so I have no doubt that she'll quickly learn some tricks.
I didn't have any luck teaching Otto to go in his basket to be carried around, though I'll admit I didn't try that long. He would only stick the front half of his body in, but wouldn't jump into it. But he has gotten much better about going in his carrier and let me carry him around in that, which was the whole point of the basket, so it seems I've achieved my goal anyway.
