definately go see an Ears nose throat dr. (ENT). your regualar family MD is going to have a degree in general family medicine. and ENT is specifically to ears nose throat. they will have more training with the symptoms that you are having. and they will run more specific blood tests and they should do a CT scan. but you need to go. you can't keep feeling the way you do.

do they swell only when you have your period? or are there other times as well? i'd definately go see the ob-gyn as soon as you can. glands swell due to an infection. but it can also happen when your allergies are acting up too----b/c your glands can't drain properly. but if they are that swollen and hurt...hmmmm......the only time my glands were so swollen that they caused bad pain was when i had CMV virus. basically 95% of the population carries CMV virus. but only about 5% go into active CMV. it's and autoimmune disease similar to mono or lupis. and your glands do swell horribly. when i get stressed it tends to aggrivate the CMV and my glands will swell. But after i had my tonsils out a few years ago the swelling isn't nearly as bad and i only get it once in awhile. what other symptoms do you have? are you tired a lot? can you eat? sorry i'm a nurse so i ask a lot of questions...lol

I have had severe active CMV virus (which you are right is usually latent). I have had it so bad that I was bedridden , too weak to hold a fork or sit upand every gland in my body was swollen... salivary glands, axillary (armpits)_, groin (Inguinal), behind my knees, behind my neck. etc. I had CMV neuritis as it affected my nervous sytem and was extremely painful. In my case the blood titers remained elevated for extremely lenghty periods of time which left me bedridden and helpless for months
My diagnosis of Chronic fatigue syndrome was based on unrelenting relapsing CMV. I, too get relapses when stressed at all or even over excited. I too have high antibodies to Ebstein barr, and HHV6 which all contribute to fatigue and swollen glands. I also was an RN but had to stop working due to this condition

Swollen glands during your perod doesn't mean necessarily that you have endometriosis ( but could be)or a gyne problem but could also be a quiet case of mono or another infection etc that flares up when you have your period.

you need to get it checked out and you need to be persistent asdoctors tend to dismiss subtle symptoms.

oh my!!! I do remember the months of weekness. my family MD didn't know what to do or what it was. It wasn't until 6 months later when i kept getting infections in my throat that i went to the ENT and was diagnosed with CMV and chronic cryptic tonisilitis. my glands would hurt so bad and i'd rub them (on the outside of my neck) and it would make the puss squish out of my tonsils. it was so disgusting. My ENT said it's very common with adults that get tonsilitis to also get with it CMV, Ebstein bar, or lupis. IF i run myself ragged then i get tired and my glands swell and hurt and i just feel blah. but i don't have the months of being in bed.

anyway......i agree with maureen....get checked out. it's your life and you've got a full one ahead of you so do what you can to make it the best it can be. never wait when it comes to your health.

Is direceted to me or Missbinky? If so, ok!

Sorry MissBinky for hijacking your thread anyway!

Wabbitsmom: The doctor told me to massage my neck but it hurts to do that so I will look into the ice!

I wonder if I could have CMV also......... I will look it up.......

Eta: I looked it up and from my persepective and from the symptoms I have had I think I either have a case of CMV infection or mono.

actually i can't remember who has what symptoms now and how many people have them....lol....i have to go back thru the thread and look....lol.... I'd say that YOU need to see an ENT and missbinky could maybe start with the ob-gyn. honestly, if you go to one MD and they won't do anything then go to another. CMV is very similiar to mono---i think it's a strand of mono to be exact. As a kid i was never sick. never got strep EVER...never had allergies, asthma, flu's or anything. just a cold once in awhile. then BAM!! CMV with chronic cryptic tonsilities and it was the hardest year of my life. Best thing to do is to get checked out.

All those viruses are in the herpes family although most people think of herpesas being herpes simplex 1 which causes cold sores but initally will cause a flu-like illness

herpes simples 2 is really the same as 1 except it results with sores on the genitals

CMV (cytomegalovirus) is latent in most of the population but sometimes creates a mononucleosis type illness. It is very dangerous to the infant if a woman contracts CMV while pregnant and it is dangerous to people with AIDS who have a severely compromised immune system.

Most people have antibodies to CMV but not the active illness.

Epstein _Barr is another herpes virus that we all know. This virus is very common and causes swollen gland and fatigue.

The 5th herpes virus is shingles which is nothing more than the chicken pox virus that has lain dormant in the body coming out again when a person get older and immunocompromised.
Many of these viruses can have a significnat impact on a persons well-being yet Drs are often less interested in them because they are common and because there is really no treatment except time and rest.

All of these viruses can be cultured for through a blood sample.
never let a docotor tell you that you are OK if you know that you are not. or minimize anything you feel.
