Regarding Tony's eye, I'm wondering how long it might be for the topical antibiotic to make a difference if it does?

He gets Fougera triple antibiotic ointment in his eye three times per day. I don't see much change (good or bad)if any and he's had 4 treatments - just put the 5th in a few minutes ago.

Don't know for sure but I'd give it more time than a few days unless his eye looks worse

Beau is on antibiotic salve and it took a long time but he was getting bicillin too and didn't have the same problem

We had a little mini rex boy that had a scratched cornea that ulcerated. (Thank goodness my vet did a stain!) He was on the antibiotic drops for 2 weeks. It was 6-7 days before we saw noticable improvement. And then we had to continue with the drops for another week.

It did heal, it just took time, and consistant medication.

Thanks! I'm glad I asked.

Dr. L did the stain and she couldn't find a scratch at all! Nothing. So, we think if I did pinch it accidentally that might have done it..... or maybe it was missed somehow. That's why we are trying this first. I asked about shots or oral medicine but she said there is very little blood flow to the cornea so it wasn't really an option that would help. I am being VIGILANT with his eye ointment. I put it in this morning before 6 a.m. I'm just home from work and going to put it in soon and then tonight before bed.

Aww, poor lil man. I hope his eye heals quickly. But my vetsaid that due to the lack of blood flow to the eye, it does take time. Patience.

And don't stop the antibiotic until the course is up or the vet says so. Even if you don't see an improvement. If you don't finish the antibiotic, you know it can open the way for antibiotic resistant strains to set in.

Hugs to Tony... and you.

Yep. I think I am going to give it through the weekend and if there's no improvement at all, I'll call the specialist. That would be a week.

The kids are really mad cause we were supposed to go to Kentucky this weekend for the North American Livestock Exhibition..... I am not going. Too many things preventing it and now Tony needs me. Hubby is going on the "guys' weekend camping trip" and no one will be around to let the dog out, feed all the animals, etc., so we're staying home!

This is just one of those times when they will have to understand. "Stuff happens"...

Yep!

I am really bad about taking care of the bunnies myself anyhow - and add Tony's eye to the issue and I just can't leave him like that! I might take them for part of a day but if I do, we won't spend the night and we won't be there all day.

This weekend is the best weekend to go to it cause they have the rodeo, horse shows, sheep shows and the goats come in..... all of our show animals *sigh*

Umm....I tend to disagree with your vet. If we have any type of eye infection, we use a systemic antibiotic as well as drops/ointments. I do not play with eye infections. Too much risk to the eye and it's veryclose to the brain. Why take the chance when the risks of antibiotics are reallyquite low? Hit it with the big guns. There is no way to know for sure that they primary infection is in the cornea.

I see wild finches come in with something that is generically known as Finch Eye Disease....it even has a specific technical designation. It is conjuctivitis. The bird's eyes will crust over. That means they can't fly so they can't find food or water and it makes them easy prey. You can clear it up with drop/ointment but without a systemic antibiotic, it always returns. I would urge additional discussion with your vet regarding an appropriate systemic antibiotic....and for me, I use pain meds too with any eye issue. I don't like to suffer eye problems so I don't think my rabbits would either.

Randy, I think that's why she's sending him to the specialist. She gave me the option of waiting a short time only because it's so expensive and to be honest, right now I can't afford to take him if I don't absolutely have to. :(
