President's Dog (bit of a rant)

I don't really care whether they got their dog from a breeder or a shelter. What I'm happy about is that they didn't make an impulse purchase and actually researched what dog would fit in with their family needs. So many people make impulse purchases and those dogs (cats, rabbits, etc.) are the ones that are more likely to end up being passed along (possibly to a shelter).

From what I understand, this dog is already second hand. The breeder had already sold the dog and it was returned. As many good breeders do, they requested the dog be returned to them if there were problems rather than sending the dog to a rescue or shelter. The breeder then put the dog through puppy behaviour school so that it would be a better candidate for "first dog". Even though its not technically a rescue/shelter dog, I think it was a well thought out choice.

They could have made the garden all around their house, it's their choice , they live there. If they wanted to put a moat, it's still their choice. They have to live there and if that makes it feel more like home to them, then so be it.

Yeah, I agree with what others have said. Nobody's business but theirs! And I think it's great that they did proper research about what dog would be best for them rather than just rushing out and getting one. As EileenH said, it's easy to say that they would like to get a shelter dog, but it just doesn't always work out that way- just unfortunate that he is who he is and is quoted all over the place for it.

I also think the vegetable garden is a great idea! Great example to set for using fresh, local, seasonal produce :) Wish I could have one that big lol!

Something that also has to be kept in mind, is that shelter dogs arnt right for everyone. while even breeders dogs can have issues, i know a LOT of shelter dogs with issues from abandonment, abuse, malnourishment.
my dog for example...he is terrified of men, pees when i catch him doin something bad and tell him to no or to go kennel...probably afraid ill hit him. he is also VERY clingy and has seperation anxiety.

not saying every shelter dog has these issues, but most do. specially from being passed around from shelters and foster homes. with thier lifestyle i dont know how ideal a dog-that might have issues like that- would fit with thier family.

so in the end there is more to consider than just whether the dog is hypoallergenic and breed...its personality too. the decision was soley thiers and there should be no contraversy over it.

plus..no one makes a big deal about movie stars who get thier dogs from breeders....why the president?

Sparky is the same, with boys though. Children (not toddlers) but little boys. I'm sure he thought of his daughters about this decision before he got the dog. It's hard to see how a dog reacts with diffrent people when he's in a cage all day. You don't know his past.

I'd love to see a bunny (esp. a Flemmie!...or an E-lop ;)) in the White House. Couldn't you just picture one running through the halls next to Obama? ('C'mon Mr. PresidentDad, keep up!')

Now, iff'n it was Yofi, I could just see The Boy causing mayhem and havoc everywhere. The President would be in the Oval Office giving a televised speech and in would fly (almost literally) the Yofster, ears sailing as he'd whoooooosh! up onto the desk for his own PR moment. Poor Obama wouldn't be able to get a word in edgewise; Yofi'd be so in his face and hogging the camera ('Did ya get my good side, Mr. Camera Guy? Huh? Didya??').

He sure would have fun on those well-polished floors too...skidding to a stop is one of his favorite things to do, only in the White House he'd probably have his intentions set on one room and wind up six doors down. :p

Actually, there has been at least one pet rabbit at the White House before. Its been a while but I think it was the Kennedy's. They had a slew of pets.

That would be so awesome if the President got a bunny. :) I could just imagine Yofi being a White House bunny! :p Wouldn't that be neat. lol.

Why did he get a pet now? Is it because the past Presidents had pets in the White House that he needs to keep the tradition?

He promised his daughters they would get a dog if he won the presidential election ;) Apparently they'd been asking for one.

"Not quite sure what's wrong with a veggie garden in the front yard. I think lawns of turfgrass are wasteful and ugly"

Nothing wrong with vegetable gardens in peoples front yards..I lived in an area where a lot of Asian people did that - but I like the tradition of the White House looking like the White House...not a farm.

p.s. I'm 100% for the First Family getting a bunny -...or maybe 2 or 3:p
