Last night, Emma'slitter box contained 99% of normal-sized poops. (I found two small ones.)

This morning, what she'sproducedlooks abit smaller and darker. (When they're darker, they're also usually more hard.)

I don't want to panic and try things too early; andI don't want to bother the vet now (if at all). I alsodon't want to mess with her diet too much because that seemed to start her stasis issues (along with a previous heavy molt).

She's eating hay and drinking; but if her poops are still "off" by noon (by which time she usually drops a ton of "good" ones ;)), should I start trying to hydrate her innards a bit (e.g., with water and/or Pedialyte)?

I know the various steps to take in the face of stasis, but I still stress because this happens so often. But I've jumped the gun before and want to avoid that route, too.

Thank you,

Jenk

A lot of times my buns have small poops then later they will have normal ones.
I have one bun who doesn't poop muchuntil late in the afternoon. I mean he will go all day with nothing and then lo and behold around 4pm there will be a big pile. I will be all ready to freak out and run to the store for pedialyte and when I come home he has already pooped.

Now I know that you don't want another stasis problem
butI think that if you continually try to hydrateher per syringe that you upset her system

there is nothing wrong in letting her go longer than noon before doing anything

I would let her go all afternoon
and not look at her at all until a set time and then if she isn't pooping give her some fluids but don't jump the gun ;)

Your response begs addtional(rule-of-thumb) questions. Before"taking action" (e.g., giving Pedialyte):

1) how much time should you give a bun that's producing mostly (or entirely) smaller-than-normal poops?

2) how much time should you give a bun that's not producing any poops?

3) How much time should you give a bun to begin producing normal-sized poops (or poops in general) before calling the vet?

There is not a set amount of time
unless it is a long time like 24 hrs.

Every rabbit is different. If you know your rabbit's pooping habits you can learn when that particular rabbit is having problems.

if one poops all the time all day and then you notice nothing then that is a problem
if one poops a large amount of poops every 8 hrs then if it should go 10 hrs it is a problem

depends on the individual habits of the individual rabbit,

different for each rabbit.

With 6 bunnies in the house it seems like one is always having minorGI issues- especially in the spring and fall. I try not to panic unless I havent seen one poop in 24 hours and they arent eating/drinking. If they are eating and drinking just fine and their poops are a little small I wait it out. If after, say 24 hours, the poops are still dry and small then I would syringe some extra fluids.

With my bunnies its usually gas more than anything else. So I can usually tell whena bun is starting to be sick more by his actions than his poops. If I see him sitting in one place a lot and/or pressing his belly to the ground I immediately dose him with 2 ccs of simethicone, a little metacam, and a few ccs of fluid. But thats my bunnies and everyone is different.

Id just keep an eye on her and if they become very very tiny and dried up by tomorrow then Id start syringing a few ccs of fluid. For now, Id just try to let her gut regulate itself. I know you dont want to wait too long if something is developing but you can also make things worse by overcompensating and not letting her gut regulate itself. If you feel the need to do something tonight, try putting some extra hay in her cage (like somewhere fun- try stuffing it in a paper towel roll or in a basket or something). Or try adding a little pedialyte to her water bowl.

Keep us posted and try not to stress out too much :)

Haley,

I've waited things out this long (it's now 11 pm, CST), andEmma is still eating/drinking/pooping--though her poops are varying somewhat in size. Still, nothing has been ultra-tiny, and she produced some "good" ones while out running around tonight. ("Good" poop. Would you listen to me? :help)

I've learned that when Emma has gas, she looks like absolute hell: droops her head, wears a morose expression, hides (in her bed or her wooden hut) and frequently repositions herself. She's not done any of those things since I've noticed some changesin her poops. So I'll continue doing the same-ol', same-ol', especially because, as you and Maureen have mentioned, I don't want to possibly disrupt her gut flora, if it's not necessary.

Thanks, again. Sorry for the bout of neuroses. :pullhair:;)

Good poop is good poop no doubt about it
I"m glad that she's producing some of them,at least part of the time which

means that she's OK for tonight !!:D

I found 8-10 small poops in her cage litter box but am uncertain if they were produced overnight or prior. :?

She'sproduced poop in her outside litter box overnight/this morning, but I still feel leery. She's producing mostly normal-sized poops. (Sheused to produce 100% consistantly-sized poops).

Also, her poop goes from not smelling for a week (or longer)to having a rather pungent odor. No parasites were detected from a fecal float, and the vet has said that she could be emptying her cecum at regular intervals.

At least what I've found in her box today has moisture (isn't bone dry); I'm still keeping an eye on it. But if I need to call the vet, I want advice--not another useless visit. I can't continue running there (and stressing the girls) so much as I have in the past.
