Heyy :coolness:

So Oreo is entered in a show in TN for the 8th of may. He's entered in Youth 1, Open 2, and Open 3. What can I expect to hear? I'm also buying a couple new does. What should I look for in them that would pair well with Oreo for the best possible kits? Also, I'm still learning to pose him. Am I doing it right?

Well, his chocolate color is nice and rich looking (he is a chocolate otter right? I think I see ear lacing)

he looks weak in the shoulders, and HQ. he ears are long, his head could be a little larger (seems a little fine looking, like a does head instead of a bucks). shoulder's also seem a tad long, in fact his whole body seems a little long.

here is a website that is helpful with mini rex. I remember my brother using the pencil test when he bred them and it really does work!

edit: I am a goof and forgot to post the link :biggrin2:

Thanks :thumbup Hes a black otter but my camera makes him look wierd. Hes alot darker in real life. What should I look for in a doe for better offspring between the two?

I need to print this out and use it.. Thanks Katt...

wow, he really doesn't look like a black otter!

funny what a camera can do! lol

honestly? unless you can find a really nice type doe, I would be looking for another buck (IMO)

if you are looking for a doe, and will not consider a different buck, I would suggest finding a doe with really nice short ears, a nice, wide head, great shoulders and a short body.

but I would also take in what anyone else says, I haven't bred mini rex (well, my brother had them) for like 6 years now!

OTTER - Black Otter Standard Rex and again for the best color you want otter to otter. Black and Blue otter to each other and Chocolate and Lilac otter to each other- again the Blue and Lilac otter could probably work together. If you only have one Black Otter you could cross to a solid black rabbit, etc.,

I wouldn't breed a blue and lilac together personally, the mix will create really washed out looking blues, if memory serves me correct.

I would suggest sticking with just ONE color to start off with, maybe 2.

I would go for black otter (being your first color) and maybe solid black.

the reason being that you want to establish your lines and learn what works well for TYPE and BODY before color. It is a HUGE mistake that many first time breeders make, is collecting 'all the pretty colors and breeds' instead of focusing on one breed and one color

*sorry, just my rant to new breeders*

Very good advice :thumbupI plan to focus on solid/ broken blacks.

good luck a the show!! please do tell me how he does, he didn't do bad a all for me last fall, I had been told he was not dense enough in coat, but he was nice.

Question 1: Are you a Youth yourself? Just curious, because if you are not, then you are not allowed to show in youth. ;)

Anyway, onto the critque.

He's not posed correctly, so I will tell you what I can.

I would like to see more depth to his body. His topline looks nicely well-rounded, but it looks like he peaks too early. In the 2nd pic, it shows his HQ off nicely, but he isn't posed properly, so I don't know if it's just the way he is in that picture, or if that's what he would look like when properly posed. ;)

His head is very refined and delicate - I would like to see it more chunky and "manly". lol.

Looks a little long in the shoulders, as well as the midsection and, overall the body.

From the pictures he looks like a Broken Chocolate! Can't believe he's actually a Broken Black Otter!

Despite the importance of the fur in a Mini Rex, I don't believe one person has mentioned it in this thread.

The fur of the mini rex is extremely important! If a mini rex doesn't have a good coat as well as good type, it shouldn't be considered for use in a breeding program.

The points designated to the Mini Rex coat are "35", equal to that of the body! Fur & color comprise 1/2 the total points!

So, while general type is 45 points, the coat is of just as much importance when choosing breeding stock.

It's very difficult to tell from the photo, but the rabbit in question appears to have a coat that is long, lacks density and doesn't have a springy texture. It also has poor color.
