Hi there!

I'm in the process of researching rabbits as pets. I've read a ton of books and visited a number of websites. I'd like to meet folks in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area who have bunnies. Not sure which breed I'm looking for though I love the little lop faces...so cute!

>:x Laura

Hello and welcome. I'm not in your area (I live in SoCal, with the exception of this summer) but I believe we have members who are. Perhaps someone can put you in touch with a rabbit rescue or some other bunny people. I know undergunfire is in Arizona and she'll probably be along to help you out.

Thank you! I saw Amy's posts so I'm going to send her an email to say hi.

I did find some bunny rescue groups and am going to see about attending an adoption event this weekend.

There are a number of cuties listed on CraigsList but I'm worried about adopting from 'strangers'. I want to be sure the bun is healthy and the cute 5lb wont turn into 15.

One is a 3 month old male lop...he is adorable. About how large do they normally get?

)

Hey Laura! I am so glad that you joined! We needed more AZ members on here.

I got your email, but I will keep in touch through the forum. There is so much advise on here, much more than you could get from reading out of a book!

There is a woman in AZ who is disabled and can no longer care for her 25 rescued rabbits. They were bunnies from the East Valley Bunny Rescue in Mesa, and there isn't enough space for them there to even go back to that shelter!

You can see the read about it here:

If you are interesting in adopting a bunny, I would love for you to go to her. Older rabbits can REALLY bond with their new owners. Rescue rabbits will love you more for saving their lives. If the 25 bunnies don't find homes, they will be forced to be euthanised at the end of the year.

If you are interested in going to Judy's place to look at the bun's, I would LOVE to go and meet you there that same day. Judy and I will be able to help you out with whatever bun fits your life the best. She also has three lop rabbits for rehoming as well. They are not spayed or neutered, BUT.....you can get that done at the Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic in Phoenix for $80 I beleive. If you adopt a bun from her, I will help you out with the cost of that! Also...all her adopted buns come with NIC condos :biggrin2:.

I am SO happy to have you here on the forum :hug2:.

Hi Amy,

Thanks so much for all the info! I just replied to your email but will start replying here going forward.

I would definitely be interested in meeting you and Judy. I dont mind an older bunny. Really my only concern is that the rabbit would spray. Would a rabbit who isalready sexually mature be prone to spray even after being altered?

Thank you for your offer to help pay for spaying/neutering but I can take care of that cost ;o) What is a NIC condo? I was thinking of one like this, http://www.ukdogguards.co.uk/rabbit-cage-open.jpg

I'll email you my tel# and we can discuss when to meet with Judy.

Thanks for your help!

PS - are we the only AZ folks here?

>:x Laura

Hi and welcome!

Its great that you are considering getting one of those rescue bunnies! We've all been so worried about all of them, even getting one out will mean the world to that one bunny (or maybe she has a bonded pair?!).

I have that cage you linked to, its nice, but expensive and small compared to the NIC condos most of us use. Heres a gread thread with pics and info http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=15348&forum_id=1

Good luck in your search for a bunny and for bunny info. Youve come to the right place!

Hi welcome to RO. I'm not in your area ethier. But if your looking for bunny breeds I recomend Mini Rexs or Rexs.

Welcome again,

Hey Laura :biggrin2:...

I just sent Judy and email and told her to call me or email me as soon as possible. I asked her if it would be okay if you and I went to her place this Saturday or Sunday (if it works for you two) to look at the bunnies.

I may convince my fiance to let me bring one home to foster for a little while :surrender. I am dragging him there too, in hopes he will feel bad and let me take one home. Don't be freaked out if I act like a whiney little baby to him about it :rollseyes, hehehe.

By the way. I have 3 adult altered rabbits, and none of them sprayed. The only time I had a problem with them spraying was when I brought home an adult unaltered female to foster...then they went spray crazy!

When you bring home the new bun, it will mark it's territory for a few days. This is natural. Just put a tarp or a table cloth under their cage to protect the floor. You can probably get a spay/neuter appointment at the spay/neuter clinic or another vet pretty quickly....I would imagine. Just have to make sure they are rabbit savvy.

Oh, and your bunny will come with a cage and everything from Judy. I am not sure if she will charge an adoption fee if she knows the bun is going to a GREAT home! It would be nice though, to give her a little bit...like $30 or something so she can buy more feed for the other bunnies there.

Hrm, I wonder what else I forgot to say, hehe.

OH! Meet Marlin, my Lionhead:

Right now my other three adult bunnies are being fostered in Texas by Peg (TinysMom). My fiance and I had some issues, so I went to stay with her for 2 1/2 weeks, and the buns stayed there when I came back. I will be getting one back from her in September or so...and the other three when my fiance, Ryan, and I find a new place to rent. We are only 18....so things get rocky, I suppose, at this age :p.

EDIT TO ADD: CheyAutRanch is the only other active Arizona member (living in New River), besides us. So....we have three AZ members!

Hi Amy,

Either day works for me. I do want to see about Brambley Hedge's adoption event this weekend...not sure where it is yet though. Do you think your breeder friend would mind if we stopped by? I'd like to see her little ones too.

Of course I'll give Judy some money for all the great work she's been doing. I couldn't not give her something.

I'm going to call some vets in the area tomorrow and do an initial 'phone interview'. I want to have a vet picked out before I adopt so if something happens I know exactly who to call and where to go. Not to mention I want to get a check up ASAP and find out when he/she will be ready to be altered. Do buns need shots like cats and dogs? Do they have scheduled vet visits or do they go in just for check-ups?

Marlin is a puff of cuteness! I hope that my bun and I can be that bonded too. You'll have to help me look for signs that a bunny will be a cuddler. I plan on mushing him/her with tons of hugs and kisses!

>:x Laura hmmm, if I get a lop I'm going to have to change that to <:x LOL

Bunnies don't need shots here in the US as the diseases they vaccinate against aren't prevalent here. Many people take their buns in for a "well bunny visit" once a year or so just to have them checked up.

I adopted both of my bunnies form a shelter. We don't know how old they were, but they were full grown when we got them, full grown when they were spayed/neutered. I have never had a problem with spraying.

Good luck!

Laura :)...

I just send my breeder friend an email to see if we could make an appointment with her for this Saturday or Sunday. So, it might be a busy little weekend full of rabbits, hehe!

Either that, or we can wait until two weekends from now, when she will have Holland Lop babies ready to go.

I also asked her what kind of buns she has available right now...so maybe you will be interested in one of those. I know for a fact she has 7 week old Lionheads ready. They are so adorable.

I am also still waiting on an email from Judy to see if this Saturday or Sunday would be a good time to come over and look at all her bunnies.

Of course, this is all IF you don't bring home a bunny from Brambley Hedge, I suppose.

Oh yeah, and if you want a cuddly and kissy bunny, then I suggest getting a baby lop from my breeder friend. It isn't adopting from a shelter...but they need homes too...and she will have a few to choose from. I got Marlin at 6 weeks old from her and spent a lot of time with him daily...and he is really bonded to me and gives kissies. I also spent a lot of time with my adult rabbits when I got them, but they don't cuddle or give kisses.

So, if you do want a baby loppy bunny and Marg (breeder friend) says this weekend is fine to come look, then we can go look and you can pick one out and she can put a hold on it for you.

*cough*iwanttogoseethebabylops*cough*

Well, I am heading down to Phoenix in a bit with my friend to pick up her friend from Sky Harbor. This is going to feel weird, because EVERY TIME I make a trip to Phoenix, I ALWAYS come back with a bunny....but not this time :grumpy:, hahaha.

I'll check back in later :biggrin2:.

Just wanted to mention that my biggest snuggler, Basil, was a rescue. I adopted him when he was two. Just because you get one as a baby doesnt mean it will stay lovable, and there are so many snuggly lover bunnies who are adults and need homes.

Just wanted to clarify, every bunny is different. I'd go for the rescue ones first if you find one you connect with- you would be directly saving a life :)Just my .02

First let me just say how I love this forum! You are all so nice and so helpful! THANK YOU!!!

Amy, this weekend works. I want to see the baby lops too so lets definitely go...lunch is on me! I'm still waiting to hear from Bramley. I dont mind waiting for the lops to be born. That will give me more time to set things up, interview vets, and do lots of bunny toy shopping!

I'm going to see about visiting the CraigsList bunny I mentioned to you...the little boy who needs to move because the landlord wont let him stay. He is in Chandler...would you want to go with me?

The lions are adorable but for some reason the lops are calling me. I think it's the squishy face and big nose LOL I picked up a rabbit magazine yesterday that had a lop on the cover. He was so cute I could just eat him up. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't use that phrase in regards to rabbits 8>/ He was so cute I could just mush him up! That sounds much better!

Hey Laura!

Saturday or Sunday is fine with me. My fiance will do all the driving, though....so he comes with!

I just got an email back from Marg (breeder friend)...she said all the baby lops are sold, but she will have more in September. She said right now she has four Lionheads and a few Mini Rexes :?. Beh! I am not sure if you would still like to visit her. She is only available on Sunday, I beleive that is what she meant in her email.

I am supprised that Brambley hasn't gotten ahold of you yet. They normally email me back right away. I know that they are pulling their adoption events from PETsMART, due to PETsMART's choice to start selling "Dwarf" rabbits. Maybe that are waiting to contact you, until they know where they will be having their adoption events from now on.

I am still waiting for an email from Judy. If she doesn't email me back by tomorrow late afternoon, then I will go ahead and give her a call.

I would love to go see the Lop guy with you in Chandler! I just want you to make sure you are ready to bring a bunny home by then...just incase you decide you want him. It's not just the supplies that you need, but you also need to make sure you are ready to own a bunbun :p.

You have to make sure you are really connected with a rabbit before deciding to bring it home. Follow your heart when it comes to this :).

Oh yeah....do you have MSN, Yahoo, or AOL messenger?

Hi Amy,

I'm going to email Brambley tomorrow to see if they found a new place. I'll post here on the boards in case there are other AZ'ers lurking out there!

I'd still like to meet Marg and see her bunnies. I dont mind waiting until Sept. Are the bunnies not yet born or they just wont be ready to adopt until Sept? Let me know what time on Sunday and where to meet you. I'll email you offline too. And we'll see about visiting Juday too.

I'll let you know about the Chandler bunny too. I was going to go over on Sunday but if that won't work because we're going to Marg's I'm sure I can change the visit to Sat. Or...depending on where Marg is and where this bunny is maybe we can hit both in one day. I'm definitely not getting a bunny this weekend, though part of the reason I'd like you to come with me is to not let me be swayed by extreme cuteness! LOL This is just a visit to see if there is a connection with the bun and to check out the adoptees. I'd also like to take the bunny to a vet before finalizing the adoption as this little bun has never been to a vet. They said that wouldnt be a problem.

Oh...did you all know that this is National Rabbit Week? Yep....July 15-20! :rabbithop

Hey Laura!

I am extremely dissapointed to tell you this, but Ryan's mom won't let us use her car to get to Phoenix now...and she is being stubborn and won't just use Ryan's car to drive around town all day, like she needs to. Ryan's car won't make it to Phoenix and back...those mountains are killers.

We can definitely do this another day. I will have to look at my work schedual and Ryan's to see when we can plan this out again.

I honestly am not sure if Ryan's mom said "no" to using her car on Saturday, or both days. I'll ask Ryan again later, when I get off work and let you know. Maybe we can talk with his mom again. She is an older mom, so she can be really stubborn.

Oh, and about me coming with you to keep you from the bunny cuteness....UM....I thought you were going to keep me from the bunny cuteness and from bringing another one home? hehehehe.

Oh, yeah....if you are able to wait until September (if you don't find another bun before then), then you should come to the Yavapai County Fair here in Prescott Valley....it runs from Sept. 20th - 23rd, with the rabbit showing starting at 8am on the 20th. I will be there....and they have TONS of rabbits for sale to chose from. Breeders come from all over AZ and other states. Lots of cute loppies!

I will get back to you after work to let you know if we can actually make it this weekend.

Hi Amy,

No worries. I totally understand and ifasking again would cause problems don't worry about it. There will always be a next time.I'll just have to be strong and not fall in love with this bun! Keep your fingers crosssed for me!

I will DEFINITELY be at that fair! I'm going to see this one bun this weekend and if there is no connection then I might just hold off until Sept. anyway.

I'll keep you posted!

<:x Laura

Yep, it is a no-go. Ryan's mom is leaving on the 25th to go to Kansas for two weeks. She is driving her car there, so she doesn't want us taking her car to Phoenix because if a car accident happens or something, then she won't be able to go to Kansas to visit her family.

I can understand that! I can get my friend, Mallary, to drive down there sometime though, if we all don't have work that day.

I am going to post another email from Judy in the "AZ bunnies" Rescue Me section....it is really sad. I feel so bad for this woman.

Welcome to RO!

I hope you canfind the perfect bunny for you, even if you do have to wait a bit, it will be worth it. With my Maddie, I had to wait a little longer than I would have liked, but as soon as I saw her I knew she was just the bunny for me.:)

Good luck!
