Has anyone ever heard of this superstore chain? (I am assuming it's an American company.)
I was walking my dog to PetSmart this morning and noticed that there'sa Petcetera going up not far from my house. Since I've never shopped atthis particular store before, I'm curious: Is it comparable toPetSmart? Any opinions on what the store is like, if you've shopped inone before? It would be nice if it's a likeable pet store, as thelocation where they are building is more convenient for me (since Idon't have a car). It certainly looks like it will be huge...they havethe main girders erected for the building and it covers a LOT of area...

Oh, I just found this info:

Petcetera was founded in 1997 by Daniel S. Urbani, and thecorporation now has 33 stores throughout Canada. The Head Office is inRichmond, a suburb of Vancouver.

So it is Canadian after all....
Well, any Canadians here who might have shopped in one? I'm just reallycurious to know what it's like (LOL...I'm so impatient to know! I lovefinding good petstores (so does my dog...free cookies at the cash! :p),and am hoping this one is too. ;))

I may be mistaken but i think i seen one on oneof my many trips to Louisiana to visit family... I was thinking thatswhat it was called atleast.... it was kinda like PetSmart or one ofthose stores... But then again i may be mistaken.. that namesounds really familiar tho..

Guess i was wrong...

I found a site that describes a bit about the store....it's interesting. This was some of the info on it:

Petcetera is a responsible supplier of live pets, as stated inthe company policy: "Due to the lack of knowledge and misunderstandingof keeping exotic animals as pets, Petcetera does not support the saleof these animals. Instead, we facilitate the adoption of exotic animalsthrough the Adoption Centre, which features a display area whereanimals are on exhibit in the store for adoption purposes.

" Petcetera doesn't sell dogs or cats - it gives them away for free! Agreat service is the P.A.W.S. adoption programme referred to above, which is found in every store. Homeless animals are available foranyone who can take care of them, and the goal for 2003 is to raise$1.3 million in order to find homes for 12,000 unwanted dogs and catsthroughout Canada. I should know all about this - I adopted my two catsfrom this store, one of which is sitting on my computer desk next tothe printer as I write!
It looks like an interesting store, according to this article:

http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/travel/Norfolk_VAS_VIII.html

And I might be wrong, but I think I saw some sites that mentionedstores in the U.S. (could be wrong tho). So maybe you're right aboutseeing one in Louisiana, Chancy...

They just built one near my house as well. It'snot as great as it seems. From what I've discovered it's much moreexpensive than Super Pet or Petsmart by quite a bit. Their selection islimited and they don't carry reptiles (which means they don't carryfrozen mice which means it's a long drive to get my snake any food). Istill shop there 'cause once in a while I'd rather not drive toSuperPet. I got my Loki and Tyr there, though, which I guess sayssomething. They do have a cheap photo centre which is probably the onlypart I'll commend them on. I'd suggest having a look, but don't expecttoo much.

Thanks for the info Shuu...as I look into thismore it seems there are some practices by Petcetera that are less thanimpressive. Look at this thread about rabbits for adoption at Petcetera:

http://www.animaladvocates.com/cgi-bin/newsroom.pl/read/8896

I think I'll check it out when the store opens and keep an eye out forany animals (bunny or otherwise) that might be kept in inadequateconditions. :(

As with any store chain, I suppose it could vary from location to location too...

I've actually been to two in my area and bothare always overflowing with rabbits. I'd seen one that was ill on mytrip to pick out a second rabbit. Sad thing is, the sick one was housedwith several others and the staff didn't realize she was ill. It waspretty damned obvious to me. Luckily for me Tyr was housed seperatelyand I inspected him thoroughly. No one there even has the slightestclue how to sex rabbits. Just the one thing that really got me goingwas their constant overpopulation. I don't know where those rabbits aregoing, but I know at least 50% aren't going to be properly taken careof. I'm just happy my Loki and Tyr found a good home.

the Animal Advocates issue is that they'reselling rabbits at all. The SPCA here will put rabbits inPetcetera for sale, which is also an issue.

Petcetera is a huge pet mart, it is a bit pricey. From aVancouver perspective, they're cheaper than Bosley's, but moreexpensive than Tisol. Don't know if you have those stores inOntario.

Petcetera keeps their bunnies in a glass case in the middle of thestore with a sign inviting people to pet them, so at least they're wellsocialized. But no, they're notoriously bad atsexing the rabbits, and they'll sell them to anybody.

Pipp is a Petcetera bunny they sold to two homeless kids who had her ona dog chain and were feeding her tree leaves. I saw her withthem when they were panhandling on a downtown sidewalk and $talked$them into letting me have her.

Hi we have one really close to us, and yes theyare really expensive, however that said when they have a sale they areusually pretty good. We bought a $300.00 cage for$75.00. We aren't using it at the moment, I want to geta LionHead Bunny. Do you have any idea where to get one in Ontario?

I have also seen Bunnies stuck in the middle of the store in glass cages, it breaks my heart to see this.

Well bye for now, hope to hear from you if you know where I can get a Lion Head.

I don't know what kind of store Pebbles is from, but she was pregnant when her owners bought her.

There are three Petcetera stores inEdmonton. The rabbits are kept in glass cases alongthe wall. There is no access to pet thebunnies. Their food consist of genericpellets and water. There werenohay for the bunnies.

They have a promotion where they sign you up to get membershipdiscounts. I did find Nutri-Cal in one ofthe stores.

Rainbows! :)

I have seen lionheads at the Petcetera near me.Was just there, in fact, and saw a solitary lop with a runny nose. Allhe had to eat was oats. Oats. How fantastic.

Thanks for the input everyone! Sounds likePetcetera isn't quite what I hoped it would be, but is in line with alot of box pet stores...so I guess it remains to be seen how this oneactually is when it opens. Wow Shuu...the store near you doesn't soundvery good at all, if you see sick bunnies in there with the others. Ido know that some pet stores allow customer access to pet rabbits whenthey have them, while others don't...those ones are probably wary ofthe rabbits being mishandled by customers or their children. AndPet_bunny, I can't recall any stores around here that provide hay forrabbits that are for sale...it's straight pellets and water, as yousaid. Many keep them in small cages too (same with puppies and kittensin most of the pet stores I've seen), I guess because they don't havethe room and are banking on the animals being sold quickly. That's onereason why I don't like seeing animals being sold in pet stores...andthey are often sold without proper info on how to take care of theanimal as well. (Actually though, I've found that PetSmart - the onehere - is good at having fairly knowledgeable staff...and they don'tseem to push the animals onto people to make a sale.)

Anyway, I will check it out when it opens to see how it is...I get thefeeling that I'll probably wind up staying a regular customer withPetSmart though...

Thanks guys! :)

I can'tgo into Petcetera. I'd walk out with every bunny in the place. :4hearts:

I can take another bunny or two, but I'm going to goforrescue bunnies with little chance of getting a home --although I actually consider buying a bunny from a pet store a rescuesituation.

LOL....I think I would be exactly the same way Pipp! Today I was atPetSmart and they had a bunny in the adoption section; they only haverabbits there every once in a while. I went and looked at him...no ideawhat type he was, definitely a Heinz 57 and very cute...and I was sooootempted to take him home with me! But I have my heart set on Englishlops (been wanting that breed since I was a teen waaaaaaay back when)and I am limited for bunny space. Sooo...I did manage to walk out ofthere without him, but oh, it was hard!

Yesterday, I came this close tobringing a lop home from the local animal shelter, being Father's Day. But my wife doesn'twant another addition right now. The Lophad ears that goes down half way and was kissing me thru thecage. He was 4 yearsold, and seems to be handled alot. The familysurrendered him because they were moving.

Rainbows! :)

I never heard of this store but it seems to methat most of the bunnies that need new homes are from petstores.Petsmart has a sign in the store stating they will take back anyanimal purchased from them and find it a new home.the one in my towndoes not sell rabbits.bluebird

I've never seen Petsmart or Petco selling rabbits. It's usually the independent shops that sell the rabbits.
