I have a question. I bought 2 female Holland bunnies from this lady. when I was asking about them she said they were born Oct 19 2008 so i went and looked at them and bought them well I looked again at the ped when I got home and the birthdate was Oct 19 2007 on the ped so I emailed her and she said that was a mistake and would send me out some another one so she did and I got it yesterday but its not signed by her...its not signed at all like the first ones were....is that odd....... i dont know maybe im making too much into this but the birdate really threw me because thats a pretty big mistake and than now the second set of peds are not signed..

Well unless your showing/breeding a pedigree doesn't matter, all you need to do is take care of them babies, If you gave us pictures weights and length we could try and estimate an age.

I moved the thread as pedigrees technically fall under "Showroom".

And as Paul said, unless you are planning on showing your two bunnies, then a pedigree is really not needed.

I'm not sure about what you require if you do show. Hopefully some active members who show can give you some advice.

You really don't even need a pedigree if you are just showing them. As long as they ARE purebred.
You want to have one when breeding so you can sell the babies for more.

they are purebred....... I just found it odd that she sined the first ones but than when she went in and changed the date of the birthday she didn't sign it. I didnt know if that would unvalidate it or not. KWIM? I have 4 bunnies now. 2 females and 2 males....I love them to death. I just want to make sure everything is on the up and up because I DID plan on showing all of them.

Maybe the breeder is just a bit scatty. First she got the year wrong and then she forgot to sign the next lot. Why don't you just email her and send them back to get them signed so that everything is in order.

Some people can be quite slow with their emails, maybe phoning her might be faster.

I don't think signing a pedigree actually validates it does it? I mean it's nice to have the breeder's statement saying its all good but some people use show software that doesn't include a space to sign, and the rest of them just dont sign them. Most people dont make any big stink about it so I just assumed that it honestly didn't matter even int he show world... but was more of an added bonus kind of deal.

people do that all the time. In order to get a rabbit registered, all the information must be complete, including weights. And as a lot of people turn over rabbits pretty quick and/or dont have scales, this part gets left out a lot...especially when rabbits are sold as JR's and don't have a senior weight recorded yet anyways.

So when I wanted to get ar abbit registered I spoke to a few registrars about it. You know what they said '' Oh just write in it, make a guess."

And I heard of a guy around here who had some of the most highly prized Floridas around, but refused to give pedigrees out with them. A friend of mine purchased a rabbit from him...and someone else ''hooked him up'' with a pedigree that was completely fake.

I dont agree with it and I dont like it but it happens because yes, it is easy. But If honestly that signature is really necessary if and when you get those bunnies reg'd, I'd just trace it from the previous peds.

I have some peds. that don't have signatures on them.
If I sold my bunnies w/ peds (haven't had to yet) then I will sign it, yes.
But the signature really makes no difference.

Does anyone know if it's illegal/would you get in trouble if you faked a pedigree? I mean, all the ones for the bunnies you own now could be fake, or made up...

I'm guessing it's not bad....?
Kinda shocking, JAK, a registrar would tell you to make something up! Wow. lol. Wouldn't think that from a registrar...

Meh I kind of understand why the registrar told me that. And I have had to fill in a few weights in order for registration. I work so hard and put so much time and money into my animals, i'm not going to let the fact that someone forgot to write in a weight 3 generations back stand in the way of my Grand Championship. Weights fluctuate throughout a rabbit's lifetime anyways, so I try to just guess somewhere in between it's parents' weights. It can't really be disproved if that animal were to be weighed and what do you know, he weighs 2 ounces more than last time.

Maybe more attention should be brought to the idea to keep people from having to do such things. Or to caution people when buying rabbits without the pedigree. i have done this a few times with a disastrous results. ITs been 3-4 years since I bought a buck for $150 and the lady never gave me his ped. Igonored all my emails, and I never saw her at a show ever again. No one knows where she went. So I have this buck sitting aorund doing nothing because I can't f ake a whole pedigree!! Thats just low.

Veryv ery rarely have a sold a rabbit without a pedigree, and I always mailed them out within a week. Infact I tell people right away I haven't printed them yet, and I have them address an envelope to themselves right then and there. There are a few breeders I deal with regularly though that mail me pedigrees and I trust them to and they do it. But anyone new? no, no more.

I was buying lops regularly from a guy and he always took forever mailing me the darn Peds. And one rabbit I bought from him for $100 and he said he'd mail me the ped. Weeks go by so I call and leave a message. This was the Ohio convention (beg of May) last year. This guy COMPLETELY ignored all my calls, emails, and emails from the Lop club I had contacted to help me. And its not like I had the wrong number, it was his voice on the messenging. And I had called the exact number the last day of the show to see if he was still there and if Ic ould take the buck out of cooping and he said he just left and to take bunny. So months go by with me leaving messager regularly. I get a c all from him one night at 1 AM. IN THE MORNING. I was awake though at work with Erron. I picked it up and all I heard was incredibly loud rock music. So his phone obviously has my number or has been getting my calls. I called him right back and no answer. I ended up tracking down the original breeder of the rabbit by means of ear tattoo and buggered around with him for another 2-3 months before he mailed me a copy.

So perhaps in the future...make sure the ear numberm atches the rabbit yuo're buying, the DOB seems accurate at least (and you're not buying a 20 year old rabbit ) and that everything is appropriately filled out.

Henceforth for me...no ped no deal.

The pedigree is needed when a bunny is registered from what I remember. I made sure I matched ear numbers to paper right when I bought them when I got my first bunnies years ago.

Hope you can get this straightened out and I would love to see pics of your Hollands!
