Hi, I have a rabbit, Sherlock, who is almost 2 years old, he's neutered and very well behaved, litter boxed, etc... Anyway, I'm going to be moving from Los Angeles to Chicago around July or August, and once I am there, I'm thinking of getting another small pet. I'll have more space, so Sherlock can run around longer, but I don't want to get another rabbit. I was wondering if anybody knew of a good pet that would get along with him. There are cats and dogs here, and Sherlock attacks the dogs, so they go outside when he is out, but he gets along just fine with the cats and they play together. I don't want a cat though either, so, are there any other options that would work well?

I was considering a ferret, but after doing research on that, I learned that they sometimes will consider rabbits food, and while sherlock isn't too small, I'd rather not take that chance.

I really wouldn't suggest any other small pet to run around with bunnies other then another bunny or a dog or cat that gets along with rabbits and can be trusted around them.

I mean, you can get rats (like to live in groups of 2+) or a single male mouse (can't be housed with other mice) as a pet. My personal favorite is a single male mouse....not high maintenance like rats, you can keep him single, not expensive, and they really bond to their owners and love to play!

Hi and early welcome to Illinois! I am a newbie slave to buns. I have a single boy (for now) who resides in my daughters' bedroom. He doesn't really interact much w/ our dog. (I wouldn't trust them alone together.) Like the previous poster stated, there's really not another pet that I would trust to be w/ your bun unless it was another bun.

I do also have a hamster & 11 guinea pigs. They're all housed separately. If you were wanting to get a pair of guinea pigs, there's a great rescue called Critter Corral that is in Chicago. Here's the link: http://www.crittercorral.org/

Now, I was never a hammie lover because I had a teddy bear hammie in my teens and she was a biter. My daughter wanted one for her bday last year and I got Bella for her. I also did alot of research and learned a few things. I LOVE BELLA! She's a great hammie. I know not to try to pick her up when she first wakes up and if she flips over on her back to give her a second.

All of our pets are wonderful...well, Buddy our bun is still working on being wonderful. ;) He doesn't like for me to get into his cage and will lunge at me but we're working on it.

Anyways, good luck w/ your move! Be prepared that in IL we have 4 season-Fall, Winter, Spring & Construction! LOL

LoL, yeah, I used to live in Naperville when I was a kid, and then moved up to northern wisconsin before heading out here to Los Angeles.

As for the pet, it doesn't necessarily have to be one that would run around with Sherlock, although that would be nice if I could get one that could and play with him. The only reason I don't want another rabbit, is because my family has a rabbit here as well, and they don't get along, even though they're both fixed. I was thinking a chinchilla might be good, but I don't really know if they go out of the cage and run around, and I think they're nocturnal, and I don't really need something that is going to keep me up all night, lol. But, I'll do some more research overall, i'm just an animal lover, and I like to keep things interesting by not having a lot of the same types of animals.

Hey! I lived in California when I was a baby. :) I've also was born & lived in Chicago as well as a few other suburbs South of Chicago. I lived in Northern IN when I was younger, too. For pretty much my adult life, I've resided in good ol' Central IL. :)

Anyways about those pets, I have a friend who has a chinchilla and they are nocturnal. I was looking into adopting a chin but when I learned they were more awake at night, that kind of did it. Ferrets? Have ya smelled one? LOL I have another friend who loves her ferrets but I can't stand their musty odor.

I'm sure you'll find the perfect pet. I'm an animal lover as well. One day we'll add another bun to the family as well as a cat and a Pug! I'm going to drive my husband crazy. ;)

You could get a pair of guinea pigs. Some people house them with rabbits, and they get along fine, but it's not really advised to do that. But you could keep the guinea pigs in a seperate large cage, and let them have supervised playtime with the rabbit. They generally get on really well (they just eat different food, and you have to be careful that they don't hurt or bully each other). I think they could visit each other for playtime if you watched them :)

And they're lovely. Really easy to tame, don't bite, make lovely sounds. You have to keep them in same sex pairs though. Well you can keep one if you give it lots of attention, but two would be better.

I wouldn't let a ferret alone with a rabbit personally, ferrets are predators.

I have dogs and cats and the rabbits love to say hello to them, but only through the wire . . . my dogs and cats are lovely but I wouldn't trust them. The rabbits also like watching the guinea pigs when I put their runs next to each other. The guinea pigs start popcorning and the rabbits start binkying! :D
