I was very disappointed to hear that an organization would be doing this. . .

To: XXXXX. I am fromXXXXX in XXXXX,XX. We are a two year therapeutic program for men and womenrecovering from drug and alcohol addiction.

Every year we give the residents children opportunities to come to thefacility to visit their parents. This will be happening onSaturday, April 7th for our annual Kid's Easter. Every easterwe give the children animals related to that holiday. Twoyears ago it was chicks. Last year ducks. This yearwe would like to give them bunnies. The children reallyappreciate this from their parents.

We are a non profit organization, so I am attaching some informationregarding our program. Please feel free to contact me atXXX-XXX-XXXX, or by email at XXXX.

Thank you so much for your time.

Sincerely,

Dear XXXX,

I admire your efforts to provide thechildren with a special Easter gift from their parents in recovery.

However, an animal requires immenseresponsibility and money. Vet bills can run into thehundred's of dollars, and rabbit cages are very expensive.Spaying and neutering costs can also be prohibitive.

Unfortunately, many of these childrenwill not have theresources to properly care for abunny. Experience has shown me that the novelty of the bunnywears off quickly and many of the bunnies are neglected.

For the above reasons, I don't believe rabbits are an appropriate Easter gift for children.

Please see this webpage with links to pamphlets containing more information . . .

I understand what they are trying. I like your response.:)

That is admirable for you to educate the public about pets.

What was the survival rate of the chicksand ducks they gave awaythepast years? To give awaybunnies, is a death sentenceforthe rabbit. Wouldthey give away puppies? So why a rabbit andnot a dog?

If they want to involve animals, a petting zoo could be a suggestion.

Rainbows! :thumbup

I really hate when Rabbits, Ducklings, or Chicksare givin to children. The animal starts to grow into an adult form andchildren don't think their "cute" any more. And the animals abandonedand are either dropped off in the wild or givin to some oneelse. Quite sad. This happens more common in ducklings and chicks.

Or what about stuffies? Why not try toget a donation of stuffed bunny toys. Live animals is veryirresponsable.

I hope those poor little duckies and chicks didn't suffer horribledeaths. And that at least some of them found their way todecent homes.

:mad:OMG! I couldn't believe this when I saw thetitle! I was on Craigslist a few days ago and I probably sent likehundreds of emails to people saying they had bunnies ready for easterand i told them everything about Easter and Bunnies and about how it'sgood and all. When i saw this i was devastated and still am! I can'tbelieve an organization would care more about the kids' likes than theanimals too. The kids might like it but someday the little furry friendis gonna grow up and be unwanted. I'm glad you responded. If i got thesame email i would have to...all though mine would have been SUPERmad.:growl: Have they replied to your first message??

So far, no response from her. I do hope that she considers the information I have provided her with.

Very tactical response:great:

I know most of us would have reacted in a ...um...less calm way...:tongutwo:

Poor animals, but the person really didn't mean any harm it seems, justtrying to do a nice thing, shame their rabbit knowledge is solittle...:(

I wish I didn't read this. I am soooooo mad and upset right now!

Really though......why give away chicks? They grow into CHICKENS. I amnot saying chickens are bad, but what kid wants a grown up chicken as apet? What if they live in the city....they still get a chicken?

Same goes for ducks.

But......rabbits?!!?!?!

PHEW.....I should stop typing before I say some nasty things.
