Oral rinse, gi stasis, molar help!

My boy Peter came down with a bad bout of stasis and we have him on baby gas drops and metoclopramide 3x daily! For our first visit the vet mentioned his back molars were quite sharp and that they need to be filed down. She said this could be the cause of Stasis but with further xrays he had a cecal impaction, hence the meds. We tried to wean him off 3x down to 2x and he regressed, so he's been getting meds 3x everyday. Today we went for a follow up and the vet said everything looked better with the exception of his molars. She prescribed an oral rinse and to drop his metoclopramide 2x daily. She said if he doesnt regress with the oral rinse and 2x meds then his stasis can also be contributed to his teeth, which we will have to get filed down regardless. We've just been waiting because 1. $$$$ and 2. He wasn't strong enough for us to feel comfortable to have a procedure that large done.


Has anyone ever had this happen to their bun? I've spent hundreds of dollars on my little guy and hate pumping him with drugs, but just want to know if anyone else has gone through the same thing?

I have known of one rabbit that had to have regular gut stimulants because of recurring gi issues. But usually they should be able to get off the meds once their GI tract motility is back to normal. Is your rabbit eating normally while on the meds(normal types and amounts of food)? Diet could possibly have something to do with your bun still having issues when off the meds. What is your buns exact diet like and did your bun eat normally when you tried taking off the meds? Have you noticed any poop irregularities with your bun on a consistent basis, such as irregularly shaped poops?

Just curious what the oral rinse is and why the vet prescribed it? It's not something I've heard of as an at home treatment.

So he gets maybe a tbsp of pellets in the AM as well as a handful of greens. I stopped giving him romaine and switched him over to cilantro and that seemed to help. Ever since he got on meds hes been eating like an absolute champ again. We are just beginning today to wean him off meds so fingers crossed all goes smoothly. His poos have always been a little different then my others, they come out egg shaped/not perfectly round (like megacolon poos from what I've looked at). During his bout of stasis he finally pooped and it was the size of a quarter....

The vet prescribed a mouthwash of lidocaine/benedryl/maalox to squirt on each side of his mouth in order to prevent any cuts by his molars and to reduce pain, if he is in some. I'm a little hesitant though because I havent read about that type of oral rinse for a rabbit. And this is a rabbit savvy vet!

A mouthwash is not going to prevent cuts to his cheeks and tongue. I can't understand why the vet hasn't burred the molars, they are not going to get better by themselves

He was really weak for awhile so we've been working on getting him as strong as we can before we go through with the procedure. She says they aren't TOO terrible but definitely need to be filed down in the near future. We have to use the oral rinse to keep him eating so when my fiance and I get the finances we can go through with the molar trim!
