I found out the name of that essential oil. It's called helichrysum. I guess if the antibiotics aren't working, it might be a consideration. Keep in mind, I've never used it myself, I have no idea if it's safe for rabbits, and I have no idea if it would even help. I just saw the effects if seemed to have on my nieces cut, and thought it pretty remarkable. If you do try it, you need to make sure to get it from a reputable company. You're in the UK, right? I'm not sure what you would have available there.

Anyways, whatever you end up doing to help your bun, I really hope he pulls through ok.

Brilliant! Thanks for that JBun :) I will keep it in mind and find out some more about it if the antibiotics don't work

Update: The vet rang and have given us stronger antibiotics for cookie which we will pick up tomorrow :) He is doing very well from what I can see, the wound on his head is not healing badly. I can't remember if I mentioned it before as I was in a rush, but his ear got the worst of the attack, and the tissue has completely died. That is where the smell and infection is coming from, rather than his head. The vets have said to obviously monitor it, and it will either drop off by itself or it will be amputated once his head wound has cleared up (just incase there's any nasties in the head wound which we don't want transferred whilst the amputated ear is healing!) Poor little baby :( I feel so awful, and it's all my fault :( But I'm glad he seems to be on the mend. We're not out of the woods yet at all, but I desperately hope that he pulls through. I love that little bun :inlove:

hooray for positive news! I've been SO worried about the little guy... hopefully he's on the mend now!

Thank you! Another update: Back to the vets today for a check up. His head is healing up lovely, that's not the problem anymore. It's mainly his ear. We know that it will have to be amputated eventually once the infection has cleared up, some of the lower part of the ear fell off today! He's still acting himself running around the room and binkying everywhere, eating, drinking all normal etc! The worry the vet said she had today was the fact that the ear around where it attaches to the head is very swollen, and she isn't sure whether it's just swollen because of the trauma and because there is pus sitting there, or whether the infection has got into his 'middle ear'? Does this make sense? She said that fingers crossed it's just inflamed, but if he shows any symptoms such as tilting the head or becoming at all disorientated, then the infection/pus has got into the middle ear and that is when we'll have to call it a day and PTS :( She is very keen to save my little bunny though, she was saying how much of a little fighter he is and that we'll try until the end!!

Has anybody had anything experience with an infection in the middle ear?

oh dear! I really, really hope you don't end up having to put him to sleep! it sounds like you have a good vet, though. sounds like your bunny is feeling better and enjoying himself, at least... best of luck to the little guy!

I've had a bunny with what I believe was a middle ear infection. With her it just got of control and never got better, and we had to have her put to sleep. I think the biggest thing is being sure the bunny is on enough strong antibiotics-mine needed something stronger than what was given I think.

I'm praying your bunny gets better soon and that the middle ear isn't involved.
