I'm going back to school and will be taking my rabbit on a long road trip. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this and would be able to offer some advice.

I was thinking about getting a small cage for Marshmallow and putting it in a bag of some sort to allow me to take her into restaurants with me without the staff knowing exactly what's in the bag. When in the car I'll be keeping her in her normal cage. The trip will be in several segments and take a few days each. Any advice for traveling long distances in a car with a rabbit would be welcome!

I traveled from California to Florida with my 2 rabbits. They were around 8 months old at the time and bonded. I made the trip solo. I had an 18" an 30" cage for them to travel in. I did have food and water available, but they weren't interested while on the road. I had the cage strapped in the seatbelt on the passenger seat with the door facing me so I could open it up and pet them. It was in early June and hot, so I had a thick terry towel over the cage to shade it from direct sun and also positioned the towel so the A/C vent blew into the cage to keep it cool.

I packed a cooler for myself and never had to take them into a restaurant. The only time they were in the car alone was either when I got gas or had to take a quick potty break. The terry towel kept the cage very cool for the short time the car was off.

I only traveled around 500-600 miles a day and then stayed in pet-friendly hotels, so they got to free roam all night (Scooter only chewed through one telephone cord, lol!).

It was a very pleasant trip for me and I don't think the buns were overly stressed.
