Yesterday, I just had this random vision: I WANT TO PAINT THE KITCHEN!!

I was thinking about how if we had the money we'd love to buy this house and what little things we'd change if we did. First on the list was the kitchen, and then I thought 'heeyyyyy, wait a minute, I CAN paint the kitchen!':biggrin2: So we called our landlady and she was fine with it. I'm very much a 'now' person, so no sooner had we got the go ahead, we were off to the DIY shop to get supplies :)
This was the original colour, and bear in mind these pictures were taken in broad daylight, and I had to use a flash because the freaking place was so dark!!
I don't have anything against turqouise as a colour, I just think that THAT much of it (not to mention the blue woodwork and door), in a room that only gets late afternoon sun briefly, in a kitchen where you need light to work, is a ridiculous idea!! I'm a big fan of neutral colours, to create as much light as possible. It's always going to be fairly dark in there due to the direction it faces, but the colour was just making it so much worse.

It's going to be painted an off-white all over, and white gloss on the woodwork and doors. But we had to do 2 very thick coats of basecoat to cover up the Terrible Turquoise! And then we realised we had to paint the ceiling as well as it was just looking yellow and grimey compared!

So we've yet to get the actual colour on the walls. That's going on tomorrowThe fridge is slap bang in the middle of the kitchen, right in front of the cooker, so what a shame, we've had to order pizza for dinner tonight.

But, it will all be worth it when I can cook in my shiny new clean white-walled kitchen!!

:biggrin2:

Pictures when it's done to show the difference!

And what an essay, apologies lol!

Edited to remove pictures that were causing problems.

Wow, that's a bright colour! Definitely doesn't make sense, doesn't even go with the units! You would think with it being rented they would just paint everything magnolia like they usually do!

Good luck! I redecorated my bedroom last year, it took me about a week to paint! But then I had to pull one thing out at a time and paint each wall which was annoying, because all my furniture was built in my room!

TELL me about it!! And the blue, with the turquoise??:shock: From the paint marks etc we've seen, it seems like the walls were painted before the kitchen was fitted. I think it used to be yellow....

The annoying thing was, we moved to this house from across the driveway- from number 7 to number 6 lol. And before we moved, we could see that the owner was painting the rest of the house- all the other walls are magnolia. She was working SO hard every evening for at least 4 weeks, bless her. And we kept looking out of our old kitchen window saying 'PLEASE paint the kitchen! PLEASE!' but she never did. I guess she didn't have the time...

Not that I blame her lol- kitchens are difficult! I had to stand on top of the worktop, bent over clinging on for dear life, painting the bit behind the top of the units. And I had to fashion an extension for my paintbrush to reach the tiny narrow bit down the side of the boiler, by strapping the end of it to a wooden spoon lol!

I really can't wait til it's finished though. Even just with the white basecoat on it looks a million times brighter. It's gonna look great! :D

:lookaroundthe color of your kitchen is the color of my bedroom! lol, i painted it that color like two years agot. i like it! but my mom thought i was weird for wanting it that color, lol...

I've painted my house several times and I hate it! I have to do most of it again soon and I'm honestly dreading it.

I like color but your kitchen was really BRIGHT!

May I recommend a sunny yellow? It would certainly brighten up the room and I think it would be nice with your cabinets and countertops. You could bring home some swatches to see what you like. We painted our master bath a sunny yellow and really love how bright and cheery it is.

I dont mind painting it is the touchup, fine lines that drive me insane, lol.

I just went over the window sills in my sons bedroom and touch ups on the wood work in the baby's bedroom and my youngests room so now we just got to get them in there. Cant wait to see pics of it all done

Nooooo, not yellow!! :hiding: I really don't like yellow- I think it's because our old hallway was painted a really bright yellow- think the colour of the smilies, but maybe brighter! And it started to make me feel really sick towards the end lol...

The colour we have isn't quite magnolia- I know it's a very fine line but imagine a shade just between white and magnolia LOL! It's hard to show it in the pictures, but it really is SUCH a dark room- even on the sunniest day of the year you still need to have the lights on all day long- that I don't think any other colour would work... At the moment, I have to hold plates directly under the light to see if I've washed them right, because it's so dark near the window even!!

Oooh I just can't wait until it's all done! :biggrin2:

And Fran, I know! I don't mind the whole middle of the wall bit, it's going round the edges I hate. And the little fiddly bits, like the window ledge- it took me 2 hours!!

That room has SUCH potential! I like the color it is but it could be so much... brighter and spacious with a few small adjustments.

Two edrooms here in this house used to be dark green and dark blue. Not a gret thing since the bedrooms are downstairs and dont have ceiling light fixtures.

I went with an off white (light wheat) color and am slowly, slowly working through painting some rooms (or at least making decisions about them).

I cant wait to see it when you're done!

:)

Oooh Leaf, what kind of adjustments do you mean? Apart from the colour lol... I'm always interested in ways to make it brighter! :biggrin2:

The second pic is taken from just in front of the washing machine, and the wall to the left of the pic has a table for storage, and then 2 bins next to it- one for rubbish and one for pellets. You can probably just about see the 'PEE' of the pellets on the lid lol! Above that are some metal shelves, but we've taken them down for the repaint...

Aaah stuff it, I'll go dig out some new batteries and take a couple of pics to show you how much brighter it looks already!

A room without ceiling fixtures? That sounds annoying! I'm the kind of person who doesn't do lamps- I have to have bright lights on in the evening... I find that I just go all squinty otherwise lol...

Dude, woah, back it up a minute ! Do you have a washing machine in your kitchen? That's uber interesting! f we had one in our kitchen Mat would think it was a dishwasher :disgust:.

I hate our kicthen here, it's pukey 1960's decor and is so BORING! All the walls and cupboards got painted over cream and peach :grumpy:, yuck. The ceiling is all greasey yellow too, yuck.

I really love blues and maroons etc etc, I'd have crazy colour schemes if I was allowed to :D.

Amy, I LOVE the colour green! I really want to paint a room pale green someday... Our bedroom perhaps when/if we ever own our own house!
Ok, here are pics of the kitchen now, with 2 coats of basecoat. It's so thick, like glue, so it's covered the Terrible Turquoise pretty well! Please excuse the state of our kitchen, and the fridge in the middle of the room lol! And we've not painted the woodwork yet...
Emulsion goes on tomorrow- the proper kitchen stuff so it's wipeable and stain-resistant etc.

Those pics were taken without flash at around 10.30pm at night, and they don't even show how bright it is now. To me it's already looking so much better than before!

Edited to remove pics.

What? Yeah, our washing machine is in our kitchen! And in the second pic, the appliance in the corner opposite the fridge is the tumble dryer. Is that weird? It would be weird for me not to have the washing machine in our kitchen lol! Where do you guys keep your washing machine?

I would LOVE to have a dishwasher, but there just isn't the room for it in our kitchen sadly :( Steve thinks we already have a dishwasher though, the Jen3000 :p

Er, in the laundry lol! I have never in my life seen a washing machine or drier in a kitchen . It's so weird, like having a fridge in the bathroom :p.

Oops just saw your pics, yay, it looks so much better already! I always like white for a kitchen, I think colours should be clean looking where you prepare food.

In the laundry? Like, a separate room you mean? I'd love to have that, but there are just no extra rooms in our house lol!

Most houses in England are built like that I think, apart from the older ones, that haven't yet been knocked through to make a bigger kitchen. The only time I've seen a washing machine in a different room is when I've visited rich relatives with massive big houses lol!!

Ooh I see, yup, this is an 'older' house, built in 1950s I think. Newer houses here have the washing machine etc in the garage normally, laundries are a thing of the past I suppose. Ours is so puny I can barely fit my big bum in there anyway :D. The drier is in one of the bedrooms because the laundry is so pokey.

Are you planning to change the tiles over ther bench? Just being nosey - I love tiles!

*Edited for a million typing errors, oops :p*

If I could have my dream house (complete with built in bunny-recsue lol!), I'd have a laundry room!:D To keep the noise out of the way for one (it's so noisy to have the dryer and washing machine going when you're cooking or something) and I'd also have space for large built in drying racks, so the stuff that can't go in the tumbler could dry there, out of the way, instead of in the hallway, or spare room lol! I'd also have a huge walk-in pantry lol!

We had our dryer in the spare room in our old house- we kicked it out to make room for Barney and Snowy's bigger cage!! It's a condenser dryer so you don't need the tube out the window type thing, and it made the room really humid- upstairs was always warm lol!

I WISH we could change the tiles- I'm not keen on them either- they're hard to clean because they're a rough surface so don't wipe down too easily. But we are no tilers, and I dread to think of how stuck on they are. I'm not sure out landlady would go for it either. They aren't amazing but at least they're pretty neutral and will go with the new paint lol!

PHEW! I can't believe the highlight of my weekend is my kitchen walls LOL! :p

its funny what is "normal" for people in different places. Here we have the laundry either in a laundry room, upstairs in a closet in the hall or in the basement, lol. I thought it was wierd to , to see the washer and dryer in the kitchen, lol.
